What's the main purpose of a mobile phone? Phone calls! My last conference call opened with one of the primary speakers explaning that he was late because "Windows Mobile froze while I was entering the meeting ID and I had to reboot my phone". Windows Mobile users are probably nodding their heads in knowing sympathy while Symbian (Nokia), PalmOS and iPhone folks are shaking their heads in disbelief at how Microsoft could have forgotten that phones need to be able to reliably make phone calls.

Misbehaving "third party" applications usually get the blame for Windows Mobile crashes, but the real fault lies in a bad OS architecture. Isolating applications is a fundamental requirement of an OS and Microsoft's Windows Mobile OS fails here. Leaving off third party apps does make Windows Mobile more stable, but even then it's still not as stable as dedicated phones. The iPhone is no saint either, but the Mac OS X watchdog kills off hung processes far more effectively than Windows Mobile and I've never had a problem with the Phone app. Both PalmOS and Apple's iPhone carefully restrict background apps to avoid these hangs.

Schnell in diesem Fall ja, problemorientiert... lest selbst:

Finally after a week and half long effort and with some help, I managed to fix a bug that was driving me nuts. I finally completed work of porting my code from Windows Mobile to Symbian and man.. Symbian is no childs play. I have never seen or worked with an OS that is so Asynchronous when it comes to execution. After going through all this, I can now strongly tell that I am still a novice when it comes to Symbian. There is so much to learn.

On the other hand it was during these two weeks that I started to appreciate the work done by Microsoft. The amount of effort one has to put in to port the code from Windows Desktop to Windows Mobile is less or infact trivial. Wonderful. Almost effortless. And with Visual Studio things can hardly be difficult for one. Hats off to Microsoft.

A voir...

Since Apple Launch its online app store they have been on the headlines all days. this market is tremendously increasing and analysts say that maybe it will be a $1 billion marketplace at some point in time. but what does this means for developers? how can developers obtain a piece of the cake?

if you are a Web, Windows or Enterprise developer as I am. this could take sometime until we could start developing state of the art mobile applications. we need to learn the guidelines and restrictions that mobile software required. if you are a .Net developer you can check out the Compact or Micro Framework, the only thing is that the apps developed in those framworks can only target windows mobile OS. i heard about some guys that are already running Mono on their IPhones, but i don't think Apple aloud this in a legal way.

Androidis about to be unveiled and a lot people has good expectations. i will be looking forward on the development environment for this. because if you want to start developing application for the Iphone be sure you got everything you need: A Mac, An Iphone and a subscription, yes that would be like a couple of hundreds $.

i dont have a Mac and i dont expect to buy one soon. but i am wondering how my 13 moon calendar gadget will look in the Iphone or Android.

It's official, you can fly but you can't hide. I was reading in this week's Economist how mobile phones on planes are not as annoying as people think according to the first in-flight trials ran by technology providers OnAir and AeroMobile. In fact, the reaction is said to have been "overwhelmingly positive" with text messaging most popular and the average length of voice calls just 2.5 minutes.

Really? Who are these people?! Sure, it's early days yet with most business travellers considerately trialing the new opportunity, but what happens when I sit down next to you? I'll blow that average right out of the sky, that's what. You would certainly have a hard time getting me to disconnect from my "life support machine" aka Windows Mobile. To be perfectly honest, even I wouldn't want to be sitting next to me- unless of course you find me on the Red Eye in which case I will have popped enough tablets to keep me in a coma for pretty much the entire journey.

Which brings me onto my second point. In this always connected era, and as a frequent flyer, my time in the sky is sacrosanct. It is pretty much the only uninterrupted time I get which affords me the rare opportunity of a "sorry I missed your call / that meeting / I could not respond etc - I WAS IN THE AIR". No more. Picture the scene: me, Red Eye, coma, call from boss - not pretty right? Perhaps, but it's coming anyway. One thing's for sure, there's no stalling the march of technology.

Bloqueador de pop-up.

[caption id="attachment_404" align="alignright" width="128" caption="Arc Slider Design"][/caption]

The X1 comes with what Sony Ericsson calls an Arc Slider Design where by sliding out the screen reveals a really neat keyboard. The screen slides out and slightly up in an arc fashion, hence, the name. But it doesn't tilt upwards like the HTC TyTN II, just slightly up. It's somewhere between the TyTN and the TyTN II. What you will find in the brush metal body bracing the keyboard is a set of great QWERTY keys and those keys are probably one of the best I've used so far. We'll tackle the screen in another posting. More on the keyboard.

[caption id="attachment_405" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Keyboard for two thumbs - my hand :-)"][/caption]

The first thing that impressed me is that the keys are larger than most other keyboards. Nice big keys make it easy for my thumbs. Although I've seen people use two index fingers on such keyboards, they are actually designed for the two thumbs while the device fits snuggly in two hands. Perhaps the production units that I hope to lay my hands on later will give me a better experience on the tactile feel of the keyboard.

Suffice to say that the keyboard is well designed and has a solid feel. Supported by the brush metal body, the keyboard can be used with full confidence with a very good feedback. That is very important in a good keyboard. Otherwise, one might as well go straight to the on-screen keypad.

The keyboard is a definitive characteristic of the X1. It separates this device from others which are fully touch screen PDA phones like the new Samsung Omnia as well as the Apple iPhone which provides only on-screen keypads.

[caption id="attachment_406" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Side View of X1 - Note the thickness and the metal body"][/caption]

The thickness of the X1 with the keyboard is 17mm, thinner than the HTC TyTN II which is 19mm. Don't look down on a 2mm thickness. Losing that 2mm makes the X1 much nicer to hold. The X1 is shorter than the TyTN II by 2mm and narrower by 6mm.

The X1 with the keyboard gives the feel of slim, thin and narrow as compared to the TyTN II being big, fat and thick. The X1 opened with the keyboard is actually easy to hold because it is lighter than the TyTN II by a whopping 45 grams. The combination gives the X1 the edge in overall feel and weight to hold, especially the cold steel.

The X1 is not for everybody. You must have an affinity to use a keyboard and the X1 keyboard is the best in its class too. I used to think that the ladies will shy away from a PDA with a QWERTY keyboard but I have been proven wrong. There are many ladies using the HTC TyTN II. The X1 will give them a good reason to upgrade when it is available.

I would classify the X1 in the same range as those with a keyboard like the TyTN II and the Nokia E90. Given what I've seen, the X1 has the best specification in its class. Certainly, if the X1 isn't, there would not be a market for it. Sony Ericsson must make the X1 better than all the the devices in its class that are already in the market. By the time the X1 is launched, I hope there aren't any other devices that will eclipse it. Oops, I didn't say when the X1 will be available yet. Maybe next time. ;-)

Note: This is the Turkish version of an introductory article about Mobile Application Development.

Note: This is the Turkish version of an introductory article about Mobile Application Development. An English version will soon be added here as well.

Not 2: Bu yazıya aynı zamanda buradan da ulaşabilirsiniz.

Symbian'a .NET'le yazabiliyor olmak ister miydiniz?
