Watching a video attached to this Gizmodo post, Full-Screen Multitouch Mac OS X Is Here (But Not from Apple), I nearly threw up in my mouth thinking of the implications.

Microsoft's Surface was pretty cheesy, I thought. As well as dumb.

It took a simulation of OS X to open my mind to the full horror of what is coming. Inevitably coming.

And probably first to Starbucks.

I call it the Social Table.

Imagine (please brain, stifle my gag reflex) sitting down to an Intelligent Table that is hooked into the Internet. In fact, it's just one big-ass computer.

But you can log into it.

Tech Fiends such as James Kendrick could leave his notebook at home. He could actually get some work done on a Starbucks Social Table. Or simply be entertained by it.

The one thing missing from that dumbass Microsoft Surface demo was the social implications of it.

You can create a personalized and customized UI that will allow you to follow the Vanity Stream -- Twitter, FriendFeed, Flickr, ad nauseum.

And call up an on-table keyboard to reply.

Sign into Second Life and do whatever those nitwits do there. Check techmeme to see if your crap merited being scrawled there. Look at reddit to see if those eejits are still flogging Ron Raul.

There will also be instant Tic-Tac-Toe, instant Checkers, instant Chess -- and, for you really sad bastards, instant Solitaire.

The variations are as infinite as they are nauseating.

Leave behind notes for people who will show up later. My god! I've just created TableMail!

Play games or chat with people in other frikkin Starbucks -- something you will need because if you find this future appealing, you're the kind of person without real social interaction, so the thought of playing with a stupid table probably makes you drool.

Really, I have to stop here. I'm getting sick.

Oh, and that screensnap above? It's from a TV series you probably never heard of. Star Cops. Made in 1987.

That's right. A TV writer thought of it before Microsoft.

Microsoft Surface Parody

       The place is pretty cool inside, with pink flamingos of various shapes and sizes adorning the walls, the bar, and several other places throughout the place - but somehow, Joe Edwards has managed to cover his  new venture with pink flamingos - the very symbol of kitsch, and at the same time avoid a kitschy environment.  The place is kind of classy, but relaxed feeling, and definitely aimed at the loft residents, people working downtown, and those with the common sense to avoid the overpriced bars closer to the stadium.  

       There's 12 lanes of bowling with projection tvs (usually watching cartoon network when I pass by on my way to work) and surprisingly, the price of a game is about the same as any other bowling alley in town.  Of course, you can rent out the lanes for an hour at a time as well (which on the weekend, wouldn't be a bad idea, this place is usually PACKED Friday and Saturday).  

       Instead of the usual bowling alley fare, they have a pretty nice selection of sandwiches, appetizers, and pizza (at a fraction of the usual grease) and a well stocked (if upscale priced) bar.  In addition to a pretty nice, moderately priced beer selection, they have an ever-changing selection of cocktails, and a list of aged rums as well.  Of course, for me the crowning jewel at the bar was that they carry Lucid brand Absinthe (yes, real absinthe.  Yes, it's legal now.  Yes, it's actually real, google it if you don't believe me), served in the french style at $9 a pop - now that's a drink I don't mind shoveling out some change for.    

       In all, it's a pretty nice place if your downtown, and don't mind spending a bit of money (but if you don't want to lay down too much cash, they've got decent prices on pitchers of all your favorite st. louis beers as well).  And as much as I'm downtown, I have a feeling this is going to become a new favorite spot of mine.  (Hey, if it's too pricey, they've also opened a new location of The Tin Can just down the street on Locust, and who can argue with that place?)

I have not been entirely useless though. I have revamped the Goldenford site book pages so each book in the main listing has a thumbnail picture of the front cover next to it, which you can see here. Though I say it myself, we do some shit-hot covers here in Goldenford country.

I've also been thrilled to discover that the lovely and hugely talentedLisa Glass has very kindly added A Dangerous Man to her Book Depository Top Ten List, calling it An erotic page-turner about a violent artist and his stockbroker lover. Gripping plot and sharp characterisation. Gosh, thanks, Lisa - much appreciated indeed!

Ooh, and we have a cuckoo in the street. Joy! We're hearing it every morning at about 10.30 at the moment - it's obviously a late riser, though I suppose it doesn't have the children to take care of so can probably party all night, the little goer. You never see the damn thing of course, but it's a wonderful sound.

Tonight, I'm collapsing in front of "Dr Who", which has a marvellous-sounding Agatha Christie plot. And of course there's "Pushing Daisies". And, I hope, an early night and a more energetic day tomorrow.

okay so now i'm waiting to watch episode 14 but 30 Rock is going to premiere on channel 5 in 10 minutes and i am in such a dilemma why am i the only one watching tv but not thinking that it is enough!

anyway tried to make lemon tea today and it got too sour.  i had Botak Jones for dinner and the fish burger was giante!  i ended up using a fork and knife for most of the part.

5. El Nachito - Homestead. Gotta love it! It made my list of top 5 Homestead restaurants because of the excellent menu, personal attention, and most of all delicious Tex-Mex cuisine! Did you try the seafood enchiladas or fried cheesecake yet? What about the banana burito? Tell Frenchie I sent you.

4. Sea Siam - Pinecrest. The first time I went to Sea Siam, I had the sushi. It was very good. Turns out that this restaurant serves two separate menus: Japanese, and Thai. When I tried their Thai curry, this restaurant became one of my favorites. Not only is the atmosphere very appealing, but the menu is reasonable. I am stuck in a rut, though. Every time I go (which is about once every two or three months), I order the Tom Kar Gai soup (chicken, coconut milk, and lemon grass), and yellow or green curry with chicken.

3. Sundowners - Key Largo. I love seafood and I love the ocean/bay. This restaurant is right on the bay side of Key Largo and serves seafood, perfect combination! This makes for an amazing place to eat as the sun goes down over the water. The food is fresh, service is very good, and the atmosphere in the evening is beautiful. Also, during dinner you can see tarpon feeding on shrimp and bait fish from your table.

2. Shinju Japanese Buffet - Kendall. Sushi can be expensive. Sushi bars can also be skimpy to big mealers like yours truly. Shinju is under $20 per person and it's all the sushi you can eat made to order. You can take selections that have already been set out or you can ask the sushi chef to prepare something just for you. If you don't like sushi, they have tempura shrimp and veggies, a hibachi chef who will prepare food you select, crab legs, and a Chinese bar as well. The chocolate fountain is definitely a winner with Marcela. The owner is also very friendly and funny.

1. Flanigans - Kendall Drive. This has become a statewide chain, but it started here in Miami. This is my favorite restaurant on so many levels. I love seafood - they carry fresh dolphin, grouper, and tuna. I love Bar B Q - they have the best baby back ribs. I love sports and fishing - there are TV's everywhere piping in game that's on (but the volume is all the way down), the walls are decorated with replica fish like snapper, dolphin, grouper, wahoo, sailfish, etc., they have pictures of great fishing trips where people can display their catches, and they have a beautiful fish tank that you can enjoy while you're waiting for a seat. At each table, there are trivial pursuit cards available to keep you entertained. The service is always prompt and friendly although very down to earth. If you don't like being talked to casually, you should tell them, because they are not shy. Of course, they put on a pretty good St. Patrick's Day show, with a bagpiper in a kilt playing throughout the restaurant and bar followed by a leprechaun handing out green roses to the ladies. All the customers at the tables get into the show banging out the beat for the bagpiper too. It's a blast.

Estava assistindo ao canal Sony ontem, e deparei-me com a faixa de reprises dubladas do canal, que, desde o dia 4 de fevereiro começou a exibir na América Latina das primeiras temporadas de Grey’s Anatomy e Desperate Housewives.

O canal Sony se pronunciou, dizendo que: “Todas as estréias e inéditos continuarão sendo exibidos legendados e com áudio original. Eu, como muitos outros, fiquei receoso que esse fosse o primeiro passo para que o restante da programação do canal fosse dublada", como acontece atualmente com as séries do horário nobre do canal Fox (que hoje é o pior da tv por assinatura em minha opinião).

Existem (hoje bem mais do que no inicio da tv paga no Brasil) inúmeros canais de tv paga que tem sua programação 100% dublada, como canais com desenhos (cartoon network, nick, jetix, disney, animax, boomerange, etc.) e os de filmes (HBO family, telecine pipoca, TNT etc.).

Eu, parto do pressuposto que, se tenho a TV por assinatura, se PAGO por ela, eu quero ver as produções na forma original. Assim deve ser com as outras pessoas, sei que essas séries não passam na TV aberta, mas, já que se propaga tanta tecnologia e inovação, os canais deveriam oferecer as duas opções, dublado e com legendas, pois, isso já é possível nas principais operadoras (Sky, NetDigital e Telefônica).

Temos ainda a preocupação de o nosso congresso aprovar uma lei que transforme a nossa tv a cabo em “Tv Estatal”, se assim posso dizer, pois nos querem tirar a liberdade de assistirmos à programação dos canais estrangeiros de forma integral.

O substitutivo aprovado pela Comissão de Desenvolvimento Econômico, Indústria e Comércio obriga as operadoras a contar com 50% de canais com conteúdo nacional. Os canais estrangeiros também terão que dedicar, individualmente, 10% da grade para programação brasileira. Não contam nestas cotas os canais do chamado must carry – que inclui as TVs abertas e os canais obrigatórios, como a TV Senado e a TV Câmara.

Resumindo: é um absurdo! Pagamos por uma tv, que hoje em dia, tem mais propagandas, tem mais dublagens e possivelmente terá mais programação nacional. Se eu quisesse ver programas nacionais e dublados, colocaria uma antena UHF no telhado e ainda não pagaria nada por isso. Se eu preferir ver uma serie ou filme dublado, simples, alugo o DVD com as devidas opções de áudio! Sou muito a favor sim das dublagens, desde que, existam as duas opções ao assinante, e quanto à programação nacional, prefiro que fiquem como estão, que fiquem por conta da LixoGlobo na tv aberta e que os canais que a mesma disponibiliza a cabo já estão de bom tamanho.

I plan to make the connections today and hopefully by the end of the day, have the TV hung up in all its glory.

The one thing that is troubling me is the concept of installing a new outlet. In order to remain code-compliant (and to prevent a fire hazard), I cannot pass my TV's power cord inside my wall - that means I need to install a new outlet in the middle of the wall - there are 2 outlets on this wall but at either end and that means I need to somehow fish wire through from one of these outlets into the new one. And, as expected, there are studs running bang across my intended wire path. I have been doing a lot of research early Saturday morning and I somehow don't like the idea of cutting the drywall at the 2 studs that are in the way and then creating notches in the studs. So what I may end up doing is to drill through from the existing outlet to the wall behind (which is a walk in closet) and pass the wire through the baseboard of that wall and then back up again. Sort of grabbing your nose by putting your hand across the back of your head but I think I prefer that to trying fancy things with studs and potentially have the wall come down :)

Solidarität unter Kollegen? Kennt er nicht. Freundliches Verhalten gegenüber den Kandidaten? Fehlanzeige. Tim Mälzer weiß alles besser, muss zu allem was sagen und fragt sich wahrscheinlich im Grunde seines Herzens, wie er mit dieser Tour so viel Kohle scheffeln konnte. WAHNSINN. Vielleicht kommt das ja bei den Zuschauern an – ich finde es eher einen Grund zum Abschalten. Gut, man kann über den Sinn von Kochsendungen per se streiten, aber ganz ehrlich, so viel Auswahl hat der Mensch in der deutschen Fernsehlandschaft leider nicht.

Eigentlich fand ich ihn früher echt lustig und unterhaltsam – deshalb bin ich auch zu dem Vortrag gegangen, der an der Uni stattfand. Der Saal war übervoll und alle warteten gespannt auf den Redner, der dann auch unter großem Applaus in die Arena (diesmal nicht die „Kocharena“) einmarschierte. Die ausgelegten Werbepröbchen, die dem ZWW ermöglicht hatten, den Herrn Mälzer einzuladen, hat er erstmal mit „genmanipulierter Sch…“ tituliert. Suuuuper…da freut sich die Marketingabteilung sicher. Jedenfalls hat er das Publikum bloßgestellt und jeden vorgeführt, dessen Meinung nicht mit seiner konform ging. Ich glaube er sollte/wollte über gesundes Essen dozieren, aber irgendwie ist ihm das nicht so ganz gelungen. Er hat dann immer wieder Einspieler der Dokumentation „We feed the world“, die ich bereits kannte, gezeigt. Das Publikum schrie „ah“ und „oh“ und war nun vollends von Mälzers Allwissenheit überzeugt. So einige seiner Aussagen waren mehr als streitbar, aber ehrlich, man legt sich nicht mit Tim Mälzer an. Sonst geht es einem vielleicht wie Sarah Wiener, die er (übrigens auch gestern) als absolute Dilettantin auf ihrem Gebiet hingestellt hat. „Die Wiener? Die kann doch nicht kochen.“ Na ja, so wie der Tim gestern die Salsiccia(eine sizilianische Wurst; mein Opa dreht sich wahrscheinlich im Grab um) gequält hat, wäre ich etwas vorsichtig mit solchen Aussagen.
