<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://radiondn.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/acertainfeeling.jpg"><img src="http://radiondn.wordpress.com/files/2008/07/acertainfeeling.jpg?w=160" alt="" width="160" height="160" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-272" /> <font size="3"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif;">Had Los Angeles based band Bodies Of Water just served up more of the same grandly scaled, gospel inflected and Americana inspired music found on their 2007 full length debut, I would have been more than satisfied.  Happily, however, they've chosen to expand their sound with some punk and New Wave style guitar riffs, some Ennio Morricone influences, a lot of prog rock and even a bit of heavy metal by way of Black Sabbath on "Darling, Be Here."  The singing and playing is as passionate and thrilling as it was on their debut, though some of the big choruses have been dialed down a bit, but only a bit.  I really love this band's music, and I hope you'll check them out.  Standout cuts: "Gold, Tan, Peach and Grey," "Under The Pines," "Darling, Be Here" and "If I Were A Bell."</font></span></p>

<p><font size="3"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif;">Minneapolis based singer/songwriter Paul Westerberg's latest album, <em>49:00</em>, is one continuous 43:55 track, with at least 12 full songs, with a few covers of the Beatles, Alice Cooper, Steppenwolf, and the Monkees woven in.  Maybe "woven in" is the correct term, as <em>49:00</em> represents a sort of crazy quilt approach to music, with the songs mixed so they run into each other, and in the case of "Goodnight Sweet Prince," over and under each other, then side by side.  Random noises and often seconds long fragments of other songs serve as segues of sorts in between the full length songs, and the result sounds a bit like the radio shows that Negativland used to do, albeit programmed by a wandering, restless, and thoroughly engaging musical mind.  Some of the songs are lo-fi sounding, but most of the album sounds crisp and sharp, so as eccentric as <em>49:00</em>'s presentation may be, it's hardly a throwaway.  Indeed, it's one of Westerberg's best solo albums ever, and certainly one of the most fun to listen to.</font></span></p>

Una versión muy alegre, con guitarras acústicas, una voz femenina muy tersa. Una gran canción para la carretera que sorprenderá a mas de dos. Y pregúntense quién es tan cojonudo para evitar enamorarse, yo se de un par que lo han intentado, pero no les salió muy bien, aunque creo que lo disimulan muy bien, al menos ella. ;-)</p>

Voltando, de certa forma as raízes roqueiras do início da carreira e deixando de lado o eletro-acústico de <em>Road to Rouen</em>, Gaz Coombes e companhia botam pra quebrar. Guitarras irresistíveis e arranjos pra lá de convidativos.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">Já no rádio, os três singles lançados não fizeram muito sucesso, ficando fora do top 40 nas maiores emissoras. O álbum conseguiu chegar até a 19ª posição na parada inglesa, a posição mais baixa de um álbum do Supergrass até hoje. Nada que estrague um belo disco, ótimo de se escutar do inicio ao fim.</p>

<p>Como Yngwie Malmsteen,  Frank Gambale, Kiko Loureiro, entre outros guitarristas, conseguem tocar arpejos e escalas em altíssima velocidade? Além da palhetada alternada, o segredo está na técnica de <em>sweep picking </em>.</p>
<p>Esta técnica tem como objetivo  principal  economizar  movimentos de palheta. Portanto, é uma boa ferramenta para tocar frases em alta velocidade.  A palhetada alternada é um conhecimento indispensável para qualquer guitarrista, porém o seu desenvolvimento requer paciência e perseverança, porque exige muita precisão e esforço físico. O <em>sweep</em> também necessita de precisão, mas nem tanto esforço físico. Além disso,os resultados aparecem mais rápido .Resolvemos fazer uma lição especial com a qual você poderá se aprofundar nessa técnica.</p>
<p>O <em>sweep</em> também é conhecido como <em>economic picking</em>, deixa o som mais fluente. <em>Sweep </em> significa literalmente "varrer´´. É mais ou menos esse o movimento realizado pela palheta com o <em>sweep</em>. O princípio é manter a direção da palhetada quando você muda a corda. Mas é bom sempre lembrar que a técnica e a velocidade devem sempre estar  a serviço da música.Então, mãos à vassoura,   ops... à obra!</p></blockquote>

<p>Vamos começar com a utilização do <em>sweep</em> sobre escalas. As digitações utilizadas em todos os exemplos estão padronizadas em três notas por corda. Para aplicar essa técnica em escalas, com este tipo de digitação , você fará uso também da <em>palhetada alternada.</em>  Um dos truques para a execução do <em>sweep </em>é não interromper o movimento da palheta quando você for mudar de corda. Além disso, deve-se segurar a palheta com firmeza e tocar todas a notas com a mesma dinâmica. Cuidado para não perder o sincronismo dos movimentos.  Toque os exemplos com metrônomo, para manter um ritmo consistente e o som não ficar embolado.</p>
<p>O  <strong>ex.1 </strong>mostra através da escala de <em>A maior</em>, como você deve tocar uma escala no  sentido ascendente. Se você quiser um som parecido com o da <em>palhetada alternada,</em>, abafe as cordas com a palma da mão na ponte do instrumento.O <strong>ex.2</strong>  traz novamente a escala de <em>A maior, </em> mas desta vez, exemplificando seu uso descendente com <em>sweep.    </em>No<em> </em><strong>ex.3</strong>, ocorre a junção de ambas as digitações. È um exemplo extraído de <em>Frank Gambale </em>no qual é mostrado como deve se subir e descer.Preste atenção que, ao chegar na corda <em>E</em> aguda, são digitadas apenas duas notas, para que ocorra a inversão dos movimentos de palheta. Quando retornamos ao <em>E </em>grave<em>, </em>toca-se quatro notas<em> </em> para redirecionar as palhetadas. O <strong>ex.4 </strong>mostra, de maneira diferente, como digitar as escalas mantendo três notas por corda sem nenhuma variação. No primeiro compasso, executamos a escala de <em>A  eólio </em> feita de forma ascendente. No segundo é a vez  de       <em>B lócrio,</em> de maneira descendente.Esta é uma maneira bem conveniente para se tocar escala em alta velocidade por todo o braço.<em> </em><strong>   </strong></p>

<p>Aperte os cintos! Agora mostraremos como usar o <em>sweep picking </em>em padrões que podem incrementar seus solos. Os <strong>exs. 5</strong> e <strong>6</strong> foram elaborados com base nas frases de Yngwie Malmsteen. Nestes dois exemplos, você trabalhará com quiálteras de sete notas, em semicolcheia na seguinte digitação: três notas na corda <em>B </em>e quatro notas na corda <em>E. </em>Note a importância do estudo  da palhetada alternada, pois esta técnica é constante nestes exemplos.Cabe ao <em>sweep </em> apenas a mudança de corda para torna-la mais fluente. O <strong>ex. 5</strong>, tem como objetivo interligar as escalas por todo o braço. O <strong>ex. 6</strong>, pode servir como lick e é baseado na escala de <em>A menor </em>harmônico. Experimente estas mesmas digitações em outras cordas e você terá um efeito surpreendente.</p>
<p>O <strong>ex. 7</strong>, também extraído da técnica de Malmsteen, mostra como tocar um <em>pattern </em>em sextinas, utilizando a escala de <em>Am </em>na quinta posição. É um padrão muito difícil de ser tocado e exige atenção especial na acentuação das notas, divisão rítimica e precisão nos movimentos de <em>sweep</em>.</p>
<p>O <strong>ex. 8 </strong>é a forma descendente do ex. 7, só que muito mais intrincado.Observe que</p>
<p>Neste exemplo, você tem mais seqüências com <em>sweep. </em>Veja que a direção da palheta é padronizada, sendo para cima na terceira e quarta notas e, para baixo , na quinta e sexta.</p>

<p>Agora vamos exemplificar a utilização dos patterns anteriores ( Exs. 7 e 8 ) em um lick de quebrar os dedos. Os primeiros dois compassos do <strong>Ex. 9 </strong> equivalem ao ex. 7. O terceiro compasso, que deve ser executado com muita atenção, corresponde à mudança de <em>eólio </em>para <em>lócrio.  </em>Veja que são tocadas sei notas na corda <em>E </em>aguda, para manter o <em>sweep </em> padronizado .Os compassos 4 e 5 apresentam o mesmo padrão do ex. 8, porém no modo <em>lócrio. </em> Esta é uma excelente forma de você ligar os modos com os padrões.</p>
<p>O <strong>Ex. 10 </strong>tem a combinação perfeita de <em>sweep </em>com palhetada alternada. Diferente dos patterns anteriores, este é feito horizontalmente, passando por quase todas as posições da escala de <em>Bm</em>.  O  primeiro tempo de todos os compassos foi  extraído  do ex. 7. O segundo tempo é feito apenas com palhetada alternada.</p>

<p>Veremos agora como tocar pentatônicas utilizando a técnica de <em>sweep </em>, o que poderia parecer impossível, pois em geral, essa escala apresenta duas notas por corda, tornando inviável a técnica de <em>sweep</em>. O <strong>ex.11</strong> traz a escala pentatônica <em>Dm7 </em> com sua digitação aplicada ao <em>sweep</em> <em>. </em> Observe que a fórmula para tocar esse tipo de escala é simples: Três notas em uma corda e uma nota na próxima, e assim por diante. Note que na corda <em>E</em> aguda, como no ex.3, você toca apenas duas notas para facilitar a inversão da palhetada. A execução da escala pentatônica com essa técnica é difícil, pois exige aberturas grandes. Execute essa idéia nas demais posições da escala.</p>
<p>Os <strong>exs. 12a </strong>e <strong>12b </strong>demonstram a utilização da técnica de <em>sweep </em>em licks tradicionais de pentatônica em <em>Dm</em>.  No primeiro lick, há uma frase no estilo de <em>Richie Blackmore</em>. Para a nota <em>C </em>( casa 13, segunda corda ), use o dedo 3.  Para a nota <em>A,</em> na mesma corda, utilize o dedo 1. Para a nota <em>G </em> ( casa 12, terceira corda ), use o dedo 2. No segundo, temos uma frase que exige abertura de dedos. Essa frase é bem no estilo de <em>Kirk Hammerr</em> , do metállica . Faça a nota <em>G </em>(casa 15, primeira corda) com o dedo 4. A nota <em>D </em>(casa 10, primeira corda) deve ser feita com o dedo 1. As notas <em>C </em>e <em>F </em>(casa 13, primeira e segunda cordas) devem ser feitas com o dedo 3. Experimente essas frases com o wah wah.</p>

<p>Chegou a hora de exemplificar o <em>sweep</em> em arpejos. Para isso, utilizaremos exemplos apenas em tríades, pois isso facilita o desenvolvimento da técnica em si.  Utilizaremos <em>shapes</em> de cinco e seis cordas. Depois de assimilar todas as frases, procure novas sonoridades, adicionando ou substituindo com intervalos de VI, VII, IX...</p>
<p>O <strong>ex.13ª</strong> mostra como aplicar o <em>economic picking </em>em um arpejo de <em>Am</em>. O exemplo apresenta quiálteras de cinco notas em  semicolcheia. Note a inversão da palheta entre as notas <em>C </em>e <em>E </em>. Após a inversão, respeite a indicação do <em>pull of </em> entre as notas <em>E </em>e <em>C </em>.  O <strong>ex. 13b </strong>demonstra o <em>sweep </em> em um arpejo em <em>A</em>.  Os <strong>exs.13c </strong>e <strong>13d</strong> apresentam a mesma palhetada dos dois exemplos anteriores. No exemplo 13c, mostramos o arpejo de <em>A </em>diminuto (I,IIIm, Vm). Para este exercício, você precisará abrir bem os dedos. <p>O <strong>ex. 14 </strong> é um lick formado apenas por arpejos, demontrando na prática a utilização dos shapes de cinco cordas em sextinas e semicolcheia. É um exercício excelente para desenvolver a precisão, pois, além de explorar todo o braço, trabalha com diversas tríades. Preste muita atenção nas inversões de palheta na corda <em>E </em> aguda e <em>A</em>.</p>
<p>Os <strong>exs. 15ª </strong>e <strong>15b</strong>,são talvez os mais difíceis entre os mostrados até agora sobre arpejos. São desenhos executados nas seis cordas, e com grande extensão pelo braço. Estes exercícios se aproximam do estilo de <em>Richie Kotzen</em>.  Inicie o exemplo 15ª, que está em <em>Am</em>, com palhetada  e <em>hammer on, </em>como indicado. Ao chegar à nota <em>A </em>, faça outro <em>hammer</em> , até a nota <em>C </em>(casa 12, primeira corda) e execute o <em>pull of </em>até o <em>C</em>. Siga as indicações da palheta. As notas <em>A </em>e <em>E</em> devem ser feitas com o dedo <em>4</em> , como uma meia pestana. Esta é a passagem mais difícil do arpejo e deve ser muito bem estudada. O ex. 15b em <em>A</em>, segue os mesmos desenhos do ex. 15ª.</p>

O <strong>ex. 16 </strong>inicia coma a escala de  <em>Am </em>em sextinas de semicolcheia<em>. </em>No quarto tempo do primeiro compasso, temos um arpejo em <em>Am</em>. No segundo compasso, emendado com o arpejo do compasso passado, damos continuidade à escala de <em>Am </em>, na 8ª posição. No começo do segundo tempo, há uma seqüência de arpejos diminutos, feitos em semicolcheia, que segue desta maneira até o primeiro tempo do compasso 3.</p>
<p>Observe as indicações de <em>slide</em>, <em> </em>para que você possa fazer a inversão correta da palheta.  A partir do segundo tempo do terceiro compasso, temos uma seqüência de arpejos diminutos, iniciando em <em>B , </em>progredindo para <em>D</em>,  e depois <em>F.</em> Neste trecho, é usada a mesma técnica do Ex.14. Por fim, no último compasso, Há um arpejo de <em>Am</em> executado na casa 17, com utilização do shape de seis cordas. Faça a memorização deste lick compasso poro compasso e respeite a divisão. Experimente este mesmo lick alterando suas escalas e arpejos e mantendo sua estrutura técnica.</p>

The songs have cathartic lyrics which have been described as anguished and bruised. Surprisingly, they broke up at 2000 because of internal fighting, drug use and diminishing sales</span></span></p>

However, I couldn’t find a ticket (85 bucks each one) because it was a sold out concert in just 15 minutes.</span></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;margin:0;"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#333333;font-family:Arial;">Anyway, I decided to go the place to see what is going on and offer 100 bucks for a ticket. As soon as I got to the Fillmore, I made the line like everyone. Two girls were talking about how it will be the concert and they could hear that I was trying to get a ticket by my cell phone. To my surprise I had an offer ‘my cousin cant come, I got one ticket available’ said one of those girls. ‘Thank you’ I answered while I was thinking how much it will cost. ‘Don’t worry, I only need money to park my Chevy’</span></p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Todo santo ano, eu, um otaku antiquado, mas por dentro das novas tendências dos animes, sempre vou em um dos mais famosos eventos de animes do Brasil que ocorre todo ano em São Paulo - SP, em Julho, o Anime Friends!</p>
<p>Em eventos assim, sempre costuma ter mangás (HQs japonesas), animes (desenhos japoneses), brinquedos importados, roupas, artigos, comidas típicas pra comprar, shows de bandas que cantam músicas de animes e séries japonesas, e até mesmo gente fantasiada de seus personagens favoritos, ou seja, COSPLAY!<br />

Nesse ano, o Anime Friends ocorreu do dia 11 ao dia 20 de julho, no Market Plaza, um lugar vasto com várias galerias para suportar uma enxurrada de gente (só pra você ter uma idéia, nos anos anteriores a AF era realizada no prédio da faculdade Sant'anna). Tudo isso foi prato cheio para os "otakus" (fanáticos por animes), cuja grande maioria são estudantes de férias e com uma boa grana guardada para gastar com os artigos mais cobiçados do estilo, e também de ganhar dinheiro, desde vendendo caricaturas em mangá por preços duvidosos, até mendigando "selinhos"!</p>
<p>O mais legal que nesses eventos tem um público bem variado, de todas as classes, lugares, estilos (de metaleiros a emos!), em harmonia, como uma "Woodstock otaku", onde gente fantasiada, os cosplayers, são saudados posando pra flashes fotográficos disparados de todos os lados!<br />

Tive o prazer de, na AF desse ano, ir nos dois domingos de evento, onde gastei mais com "souvenirs" do que mangás, ainda por estar desatualizado nesse termo.<br />

O primeiro domingo estava bem até tranquilo, a fila pra entrar estava pequena comparada a uma Anime Friends de verdade. Fui com um amigo meu, e também encontrei a galera do Fórum Portal Sonic, que também alugou uma sala usando o "Sonic the Hedgehog" como tema principal. O ruim é que tinha pouca gente, mas pelo menos aprendi a jogar Wii! Também consegui comprar o essencial para o meu cosplay de <a href="http://flickr.com/photos/boxy/851344277/" target="_blank">Alice Cooper</a>, uma peruca!<br />

No mesmo dia, á noite, também teve apresentações hilárias do Yamato Cosplay Club, como essa, com o Dr. Gero de Dragon Ball Z!!<br />

<p>Mas nada supera o último dia do evento, o segundo domingo (20/07), onde fui com um meu amigo Tom, sósia do Ozzy, de caravana. A fila pra entrar estava homérica e minha vontade de esvaziar a bexiga me fez descarregar discretamente atrás de um ônibus de caravana o qual eu fui pro evento. Após uma longa espera, receber a pulserinha e ter o ingresso carimbado, finalmente entrei novamente no recinto. Lá, comprei uma corrente longa, e fui aprontar meu cosplay no banheiro.<br />

Andei um pouco com o Tom, que era reconhecido como Ozzy até sem o óculos (claro, aquilo é natural, hehe) enquanto eu, era mais reconhecido como o <a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3041/2532038461_2b2a850ec0.jpg?v=0" target="_blank">Detonator do Massacration</a> do que o próprio Alice Cooper! Só alguns me reconheceram como o cantor discípulo de Ozzy Osbourne. Também tiramos foto para o <a href="http://www.cosplaybr.com.br/" target="_blank">site da Cosplay Brasil</a>!<br />

Depois de um tempo, cada um foi pra um canto e eu fui pra sala reservada do <a href="http://forum.portalsonic.com/" target="_blank"><strong>Fórum Portal Sonic</strong></a>, a qual tinha mais gente do que no outro dia: BK, Heax, Cronoshack, Xel, Danny, Mya, Alpha, Runner, Jerzy, Thiago, Sonic Cósmico e mais amigos que eu mais falo via msn e fórum. Almoçamos num Mc Donalds perto do espaço do evento, onde tive o prazer de comer o Mc China!<br />

Depois voltamos pro evento e sem Wii, aproveitamos pra ficar menos naquela sala estufante e dar um rolé por aí. Tiramos fotos, gravamos vídeos, jogamos baralho com paçoca, tomamos Mupy e muito mais! Foi um dia muito divertido com o pessoal que só costumo ver 1 ou 2 vezes no ano...é nessas horas que eu daria tudo pra viver em São Paulo.<br />

Na hora da saída, o ônibus só saiu de lá as 11h45 devido ao show de encerramento da Anime Friends, o qual já estava exausto pra ver. Cheguei em S.J.Campos (minha cidade) só á 1h da manhã e acordei atrasado pra ir trabalhar!</p>
<p>Realmente, apesar dos apesares, consegui trocar um domingo entediante em casa e gastar uma boa parte do meu salário em uma coisa interessante! O ruim é que agora, só vou poder gastar bem no <a href="http://www.lastfm.pt/event/621672" target="_blank">Festival Planeta Terra</a>, em novembro, ainda que os ingressos deverão ser bem salgados, por trazer bandas como Kaiser Chiefs, Rancouters e Bloc Party, todas bandas que eu curto pacas, até troquei <a href="http://www.lastfm.pt/event/656449" target="_blank">o festival que ia ter o The Hives</a>, em setembro por esse.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I just read an article on <em>Reader's Digest</em>'s website, <a href="http://www.rd.com/living-healthy/41-medical-secrets/article75920.html" target="resource window">"41 Secrets Your Doctor Would Never Share."</a> <!--more-->I expected to be shocked, appalled, and even a little upset, but there was really nothing there that didn't surprise me. Perhaps I am just jaded from my time as a 911 operator, or maybe the "anonymous" doctors are just more paranoid than they should have been. "Downright shocking" is only an adjective used to sell magazines, not a proper description of the article itself.</p>
<p>The only thing I learned is that I will never go see the pompous doctor named Douglas Farrago, nor will I read the publication <em>Placebo Journal</em> that he edits (not that I would ever read a medical journal anyway, but I'm just sayin'). However, the anonymous cardiologist in Brooklyn has my vote of confidence.</p>

<p>To truly understand the abject horror of "I Feel The Rain Fall," you should first listen to "Trailways," the immediately preceding track on <em>Songs For A Blue Guitar.</em></p>
<p>Let's be honest.  "I Feel The Rain Fall" is not a good song.  In fact, I think it's a terrible song.  I think it's one of the stupidest things Mark Kozelek has ever put on tape.  I think it insults my intelligence, what with its campy back-and-forth guitars and little snare drum part, feigning a musical connection with old-time C&#38;W and gospel music.  Mark Kozelek, you are a sad bastard who writes great sad-bastard songs like "Trailways."  Please stick to your strengths.</p>
<p>The real problem is that "Trailways" is a highlight in the RHP catalog.  A masterpiece of understatement, with elliptical personal lyrics that hint at specifics but never really give you the whole story.  With dueling e-bows.  A transcendent song, followed by a seventh-grade pastiche of a genre in which the student has never been remotely adept.  Why, why, why would you follow up such a brilliant demonstration of loss with such a clunker?</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Hay dos clases de canciones que nos gustan: las que nos igualan y las que nos diferencian. Uh. Bueno pueden haber más, que se yo. Pero si tuviera el poder mesiánico de dividir las aguas musicales en dos grandes montones, lo haría así. Estás en un antro y ya pasaste la etapa de aclimatación: tus ojos distinguen entre las penunbras, te haz quitado la chaqueta de encima , sostienes un vaso, porque esta noche estás a la altura de cualquiera. Hablas con quién viniste o te acercas al grupo menos agresor, y empiezas a observar. Ahí en esa temperatura escuchas la canción que hace que todos salgan de sus pequeños mundos, convirtiéndose en parte del coro. No estás sorprendido, una canción así no puede quedar por mucho tiempo sin una fanaticada desorejada. Esas canciones suenan (no importa la melodía) de la puta madre.</p>
<p>Pero es cuando estamos tirados en la cama con el playlist dándole replay en la misma canción. Sí. A los ojos fue mi primera canción para diferenciarme. Porque yo escuchaba esa canción mientras otros seguían el ritmo de MTV. Yo escuchaba A los ojos y miraba los papelitos escupidos en mi techo. Yo escuchaba y trataba de ponerle una escena a cada verso.  Pero ahora que se acerca el concierto, voy a pederderla. Porque si la toca, no me queda duda que mi voz al ritmo del oohoho, del coro, será parte de los ecos salmonianos.</p>

<p>How do you critique an icon, especially one who may well be on her way to becoming a legend?  A popular artist who has earned the respect of fans and fellow artists alike and garnered an impressive number of awards and accolades can present a daunting challenge to the reviewer.  A new or little-known artist presents only the challenge of evaluating the work itself: the craft, skill and potential of the artist.  The only <i>baggage</i>, if any, is brought to the process by the reviewer's own experience.  To review a <i>star</i>, whether established or rising, presents a whole other set of problems.  Whether the reviewer praises, criticizes, or presents a balanced picture of the work under review, the process can feel like a no-win situation.  The reviewer who offers the artist only praise can be seen as an uncritical fan.  The reviewer who points out flaws in the performace or suggests areas for improvement may experience the ire of fans who have elevated the artist to perfection.  A balanced and fair reviewer may come under attack from both sides, who see only the bits with which they disagree.  What's an honest reviewer to do?</p>
<p>Reaching at random deep into my backlog, I found <i>Where the Action Is</i>, a six year old release by Canadian blues artist Sue Foley.  Foley is a case in point.  Starting in her teens, Foley has by now enjoyed a successful career of some 22 years.  At forty, she's young as blues artists go, beautiful, and has opened for and played with the top Canadian and American blues artists.  She has a powerful singing style and guitar licks to match the best of them.  If she's not a star already, then she's certainly a blues-icon headed toward stardom.  She has the prestigious honours to prove it.  She's won the Canadian Maple Blues Award eighteen times and France's Trophée de blues three times.  In 2002, the year <i>Where the Action Is</i> was released, she was nominated for W.C. Handy Award for best contemporary female artist.  Foley is also a winner of the covetted Juno Award, Canada's equivalent to the American Grammy.  Foley has eleven releases on CD as well as a live DVD <i>Sue Foley, Live in Europe</i>.  <i>Where the Action Is</i> was produced by and features supporting performances by fellow Canadian blues-icon Colin Linden, who recruited some of North America's finest musicians to back up Foley's performances.  How do you approach such a phenomenon with any sort of objectivity?  Perhaps you don't.</p>
<p>Arguably, some of the best modern blues is being played and recorded in Canada.  There's a large and supportive community of fans and players across <i>The Great White North</i>, and American artists often bring their own brand of blues north to perform and record in our largest cities.  Ottawa's Sue Foley is part of that blues-movement, helping to popularize the form not only among the already-converted but among fans of folk music and Rock and Roll as well.  She's become known from her native Ontario to the American South and from coast to coast across the continent.  That she has a great deal of talent cannot be denied.  Rather than take a narrow look at Foley as she is now or as she may have been when she recorded this, her eighth release, through the filter of Foley's work I'd like to draw upon a broader palette: Canadian blues, of which this release is an example.</p>
<p>Somewhere across the decades, the definition of <i>The Blues</i> both changed and blurred.  This is normal for any genre of music that grows and reaches audiences beyond its roots.  Jazz was once one recognizable form but now encompasses a wide range of forms and styles.  Rock and Roll, itself the outgrowth of last century's ever-evolving music, evolved into Rock and a range of related styles.  So it is with <i>The Blues</i>.  In Canada, much of the blues music to be heard in local bars and on recordings would once have been called Rock and Roll.  This blues is big, electric, and rocking.  It's still <i>The Blues</i> but it's also so much more.</p>
<p>Fifty years ago, I was exposed to blues music a lot and never realized it.  My parents had very eclectic musical taste, some of which extended to pop covers of blues songs, rocking blues-based country songs, rhythm and blues, and traditional blues.  By my early teens, I was listening to static-ridden American radio and haunting second-hand stores for old records, buying them mostly because the titles interested me and not for any particular songs.  A lot of what I bought was jazz, R &#38; B, and blues music.  I was in Calgary, far from the centres of this type of music.  What I was buying was, I believed, up-tempo Rock and Roll and what was then sometimes called slow-rock.  I realized later that sometimes the up-tempo numbers were blues-based Rockabilly, Country music, or covers of blues songs by mainstream artists and the slower songs were blues-based Rock and Roll, R &#38; B, or even electric blues.  When I discovered Alan Freed, a lot of what he had been calling Rock and Roll was in exactly this same blues-based vein.  Cliff Richard's blues-based Rock and Roll was followed into Canada by the music of other British artists like The Rolling Stones, John Mayall so on.  I was also listening to music from Europe, especially France, that had similar influences.  It was not obvious to me in my teens that this music was particularly American.  My idea of American blues was the very traditional, folksy guy and a guitar material: Josh White, Bill Broonzy, Leadbelly.</p>
<p>Sue Foley is substantially younger than I am.  Even so, as a youngster in Canada, she would have been exposed to later versions of the same influences.  It's easy to imagine that Foley's style may have been shaped by not just the blues in the music she heard but also the other forms with which that sound had been mixed.  There is a thin line between the electric blues of B. B. King, Muddy Waters (McKinley Morganfield), Willie Dixon, and others and the sounds of groups such as the Rolling Stones, Electric Light Orchestra, or John Mayall's Bluesbreakers.  Perhaps there is no line at all but a subtle transition from the one to the other.  In this, her eighth release, the Sue Foley I hear is walking that line, as much in the world of Rock and Roll as that of <i>The Blues</i></p>
<p>Take, for example, Etta James' 1955 hit "Roll With Me Henry" (also known euphemistically as "The Wallflower").  An answer-song to the controversial hit "Work With Me Annie," released by Hank Ballard a year earlier, this song was on the leading edge of early Rock and Roll.  While clearly blues-based, this song remains among the best of old-time Rock and Roll.  Foley's remake of The Rolling Stone's "Stupid Girl" retains some of that Stones' sound but the rhythm section also carries strong echoes of ELO's "Don't Bring Me Down" and at times Richard Bell's organ brings to mind some of the harder-rocking songs of Dylan's early electric period.  Much of the sound of "Two Bluebirds" also seems influenced by The Rolling Stones.  "Gotta Keep Moving" reminds me of a couple of album tracks recorded by Chuck Berry, circa 1956.  "Baby Where Are You?" and "Get Yourself Together" could easily have been recorded by Johnny Rivers forty years ago.  Both songs definitely have his sound.  A bit more bluesy, "Vertigo Blues" reminds me ever so much of Canned Heat's "On the Road Again" with a bit more of a Rock edge.  Contrary to the hard-edge of most songs on this release, "Every Hour" is a very cool, soft R &#38; B love song composed by Foley but sounding like it had been lifted straight out of 1953.</p>
<p>There's also an underlying country-music feel that surfaces in these songs from time to time and brings a bit of Rockabilly into the mix.  A good part of this sense comes from Foley's voice and her vocal style.  On this release at least, Foley reminds me less of Etta James or Ruth Brown than of the Rock and Roll vocal style epitomized by Rockabilly queen Wanda Jackson.  I would say this is a good thing.  Some Blues afficionados might disagree with me.  See for yourself.  Check out Foley's rocking style on her video of "<a href="http://www.suefoley.com/video/video1.html" target="_new">Walking Home</a>" or watch her slip even further to the Country side as she sings the classic "<a href="http://www.suefoley.com/video/liveDVD.html" target="_new">Careless Love</a>" while on a 2006 tour in Europe.  [Of course, neither of these songs is on the release we're discussing here and serve only as illustration.]</p>
<p>Sue Foley is one of Canada's finest blues guitarists.  That's not me saying so but her fans and her musician peers.  She is also a fine vocalist with an excellent sense of the words she sings.  Listening to her songs, her talent as a lyrist and composer is clear.  <i>Where the Action Is</i>, her eighth release, can provide interesting insights into where this artist has been and where she's going.  With three CD releases, a DVD of her concerts in Europe, and a new book soon to be released, Foley is one of Canada's rising stars.  I may hear a lot of great Rock and Roll in this music but, at root, at the heart of everything Sue Foley does is <i>The Blues</i>.</p>

<title><![CDATA[Vol 1, Issue 7: Creating Music with Mass Appeal]]></title>

I will give you this: there is no one-to-ten detailed instructional manual outlining how to write the perfect song.</p>
<p>For that matter, I feel that songwriting is an art form requiring a great deal of skill that cannot be mastered by everyone. However, <strong><span style="color:#ff0000;">songs that have been able to cross generations, cultures, and time barriers do share some commonalities, which I don’t believe is mere coincidence.</span></strong></p>
<p>The tunes that make an impact and continue to maintain their popularity 20 years later are memorable for more than just their catchy melodies. The songs to which I’m referring have been repeatedly listed in the Top 100 lists year after year. Though these songs are dissimilar in genre and methodology, what makes each and every one of them able to claim “greatness” is this: simply put, they are extremely well-written, and therefore have mass appeal.</p>
<p>For starters, <strong><span style="color:#ff0000;">the lyrical content of said songs tends to prey on social and/or political mentalities/issues that drive a solid point home with the listener. </span></strong>But, the message of each of these songs is presented in such a fashion that it is accessible to even the status quo. Nothing too complicated. Nothing too convoluted.</p>
<p>When <em>John Lennon</em> asked us to “Imagine” a world without violence, poverty, hunger, and religion, he painted a crystal clear picture. He blatantly probed listeners to question their existence, and rethink the structure of society. He ended on a hopeful note stating that he knows others like himself are out there, and he looks forward to the day in which everyone in the world, despite their differences, will learn to “live as one.” <strong><span style="color:#ff0000;">The purpose of his song is self-evident: to make listeners question that which is presented to them, rather than just accepting things as they are.</span></strong></p>
<p><strong><span style="color:#ff0000;">Another strategy of writing strong lyrics is delving into concepts that are relatable on a personal level.</span></strong> Everyone has had a point in their life in which they’ve felt like <em>Mick Jagger</em>: unable to get any “Satisfaction.” Though Jagger was referring to satisfaction in the sexual sense, a listener does not have to interpret the song in that manner because the lyrics remain open-ended enough to suggest otherwise.</p>
<p><strong><span style="color:#ff0000;">Audiences appreciate the opportunity to take a song and apply it to their personal situation.</span></strong> As a consequence, most often songs that encompass complex metaphors don’t become hit singles, because audiences can’t get a grasp of what the songwriter is trying to say.</p>
<p>I’ve found that the best songs out there cover issues that are common and easy to understand. Hence, the reasons as to why we have so many popular cliché love songs. Everyone experiences love, romance, bad breakups, and broken hearts (hopefully not always in that order).</p>
<p>Next, comes the melody.</p>
<p>Writing a song that gets stuck in a listener’s head may seem like an easy task, however you want <strong><span style="color:#ff0000;">your melody to be unforgettable because it’s well structured, not because it’s extremely annoying.</span></strong></p>
<p>I can count several instances in which I’ve had <em>Britney Spears</em>’(sorry to pick on her again, but it’s just so easy) songs stuck in my head on repeat, but it’s not as though it was an enjoyable experience. No one likes a broken record. Although Spears’ songwriters manage to write her material that is “catchy,” it’s not always catchy in a good way. <strong><span style="color:#ff0000;">There is a difference between good and bad catchy.</span></strong></p>
<p><strong><span style="color:#ff0000;">Good catchiness makes a listener want to sing along with the track after hearing only a few short moments, and without knowledge of the majority of the lyrics. Good catchiness also tends to stimulate movement; whether it be head bobbing, toe tapping, air guitaring, or drumming on the nearest object.</span></strong> These are the songs that you listen to loud and proud while cruising down the highway with all the windows open; songs such as <em>ACDC</em>’s “Back in Black” or <em>Queen</em>’s “We Will Rock You.” They are more than just an auditory experience.</p>
<p>And by melody, I’m not just referring to the vocal line. All of the instruments play a crucial part in writing a well-structured song. A great singer needs a strong band to back him/her, just as a talented musical act needs a charismatic vocalist to front them. Therefore, <strong><span style="color:#ff0000;">dynamics are of the utmost importance. </span></strong>A band needs to know when to go all out, and when to draw back depending upon what the lyrics suggest. Different dynamics constitute different emotional reactions. Thus, the instrumentation and the lyrics need to be in synch with each other in order to maximize the impact of your message.</p>
<p>Additionally, your songs need to be able to maintain the listener’s attention all the way through. <strong><span style="color:#ff0000;">Add solos, riffs, bridges, breakdowns, and highlight each of your instrumentalists’ individual talent. </span></strong>Keep switching it up so that the listener becomes entranced, dying to know what’s coming next. But, be careful not to go overboard with your verses, as above all, <strong><span style="color:#ff0000;">your chorus should be the section that sells the song.</span></strong></p>
<p>When it comes to writing songs with mass appeal, writing a champion chorus is by far the greatest feat, and it definitely takes time to master. Eventually, songwriters are able to develop their own style, but not without years of practice and experimentation. Despite this, understanding the following general principle makes it easier to get a grip on chorus writing.</p>
<p>Using as few words as needed to get the main message across, and repetition of words and phrases will definitely assist in making your chorus a powerful tool. For that matter, some of the best choruses written in history revolve entirely around the repetition of a single phrase such as <em>Alanis Morissette</em>’s, “You Oughta Know.” It’s bold, in-your-face, and straight to the point.</p>
<p>Even if a listener only hears the chorus of this song, the main message Morissette is trying to make is still apparent. Nothing beyond those three simple words really needs to be said. With a single phrase, Morissette managed to write one of the most impactful songs of the 90s, especially for feminists, and one of the best “fuck-you” songs of all time.</p>
<p>The last rule of thumb that I will be discussing in regards to writing strong material doesn’t really come into play, until your group is ready to approach radio stations for airplay and/or record labels for roster consideration.</p>
<p><strong><span style="color:#ff0000;">Few are aware of the fact that the first 30 seconds of a song is the determining factor in terms of whether or not a band gets radio play and/or a record deal.</span></strong> May I repeat, only the first 30 seconds of a given song! You’ll note that this is a very short period of time to grasp a listener’s attention. So, suffice it to say, you better make it good.</p>
<p>If you do manage to present something of interest within that time frame, both station managers and A&#38;R reps will quickly flip through your other tracks to see if it was just a fluke, or if your band has genuine marketability. Therefore, your material must be consistently captivating.</p>
<p>When it comes to creating compositions that have the potential for mass appeal, keeping it simple in all respects predominantly seems to be the key to success. However, I will note that <strong><span style="color:#ff0000;">there are always exceptions to these general guidelines, and one can never be certain whether they’ve stumbled upon greatness or failure without testing their material amongst different audiences to gage opinion. </span></strong>By providing these songwriting principles I’m not trying to stifle your creativity, nor am I suggesting that the only songs that are any good are simple. Hell, I like my <em>Deep Purple</em> and <em>The Doors</em> every now and again. All I’m saying is that if you want your band to have commercial success, you'll need to buy into this formula to a certain extent.</p>
<p>Irrespective of this, the tendency these days is to release albums with only two to three strong singles. Therefore, if you’re a prog-rocker at heart, you may just be in luck. There’s definitely a market for what I like to refer to as “stoner rock,” but keep in mind, in order for songs of that nature to attain success, they usually need to break in through an underground movement first, which will obviously pose a greater challenge to your band. In addition, they will more than likely require a radio edit that will substantially cut down your 10-minute guitar solos. Though, I do wish you all the power in the world, if this is the route you choose to undertake.</p>
<p><strong><span style="color:#ff0000;">Rather, if you are simply a musician who creates art for art sake, never let these guidelines constrict your passion.</span></strong> They are merely meant to be used as a tool for bands wishing to obtain commercial success, and with that comes financial remuneration. <strong><span style="color:#ff0000;">And…let me tell you, there’s nothing better than getting paid for something you really enjoy doing.</span></strong></p>

Si vaig aconseguir arribar-hi a temps jo crec que lo de Cheste amb la Madonna serà bufar i fer ampolles!</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">De fet vaig ser dels 100 primers en entrar! Estava tan emocionat donant voltes per dins, xafardejant les instalacions que, de sobte em vaig trobar a Pete Dorothy, tot yonkarra, darrere una valla del backstage tambalagant-se de peu. Com a anècdota destacar que em van entrevistar de Telemadrid, el canal més manipulat de la història, així que no m'estranyaria que al reportatge sortís jo assegurant que en realitat havia vingut a ballar sardanes!</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">L'aforament no es va omplir ni de lluny! Segons els organitzadors erem 9.000 persones, la qual cosa em sembla una dada extremadament optimista. Espero que aixó serveixi de lliçó als senyorets de la productora i mai més els hi passi pel cap fer coincidir en un mateix fi de setmana el Summercase, el FIB, Bruce Springsteen i aquest festival. Tot i que a mi em va anar genial aquest ambient tan familiar, ja que es podia estar perfectament a les primeres files sense aglomeracions de cap tipus, ni cues per anar al labavo o als bars.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">EL públic era una curiosa barreja entre indicool-gafapasta, gays treintons (fans de Morrissey), gòtiques (fans de Siouxie) i nenes pijes (incomprensiblement, fans de Mika).</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><strong>THE RUMBLE STRIPS</strong></span>- <span style="color:#0000ff;"><em>The sun is shining</em></span></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Un entretingut grupet de rumba-indie, molt apanyat, que va actuar per les úniques 50 persones que van tenir l'humor d'aguantar el sòl de justícia que queia a les 18:30h.</p>

Els pocs fans que s'havien congegat a les primeres files es sabien millor les lletres que ell mateix. Relament posar a aquest pallasso a telonejar els deus i deeses del glamour que posteriorment desfilarien per aquell mateix escenari és un atemptat contra el rock!<br />
<strong><span style="color:#008000;">El millor-&#62;</span> </strong>Veure com el guitarrista es fotia una ampolla de "tintorro" entre cançó i cançó.<br />

Realment és una performer nata, viu les cançons al límit! Increïble la coreografia de "In to a swan", una mica més i fa el llac dels cignes sencer! Jo la vaig disfrutar des de primerissima fila rodejat d'una marabunta de gòtiques amb el maquillatge corregut (Juliol no seria el millor més pels sinistres!).</p>

Després de projectar videos de Nancy Sinatra i les New York Dolls sobre una tela blanca es va desplegar un fons d'escenari adornat amb fotografies de presos històrics i de sobte... pam! Apareix ELL (que per cert estava a escasos 2m de mi) entonant "<em>The Last of the Famous International Playboys</em>" i amb un públic completament embogit i entregat va anar desgranant els seus hits més recents (<em>First of the gang, Irish Blood, Life is a Pigsty...</em>) barrerjats amb els grans clàssics dels Smiths (<em>Ask, Vicar in a tutu, How soon is now?, Sister I'm a Poet.</em>..), així com una versió dels Buzzcocks i un tema del seu proper àlbum, encara inèdit.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="color:#008000;"><strong>El millor-&#62;</strong> </span>Tot! Però sobretot la extraordinaria qualitat del só i el talent de la seva banda. Em van encantar també els seus mítics comentaris sarcàstics sobre Espanya (que si els toreros, qeu si el mal gust musical que tenim, que si no venia a Madrid des de 1952...). "L<em>ife is a pigsty" i "The world is full of crashing bores"</em> em van fer posar la pell de gallina i l'espectacular final amb "<em>How soon is now"</em> va ser apoteòsic.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">No tenia cap esperança dipositada en un grup anomenat "patatona calenta" però, tot i que no els coneixia ni sa mare van aconseguir que tothom es recuperés del Holocaust sonor anterior i es poses a ballar technopop com per art de màgia, i de pas calentar l'ambient per la festa que vindria després.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Quin peaaazo de concert!! Tot i que la majoria del públic no havia vingut a veure'l a ell, va aconseguir que amb tan sols 20 sg de "<em>Relax, take it easy"</em> els milers de persones que estavem allí aplegats comencessim a ballar, saltar i cridar durant una hora, sense parar per respirar ni un instant.<br />
Amb un escenari decorat com una floristeria, que anava canviant d'atrezzo a cada cançó, ballarines, coristes disfressades, seprentines, gloubus gegants, confetti... I que dir d'ell? Doncs que és una estrella del glam de dalt a baix, que ho viu, ho disfruta i s'ho passa teta al escenari i es nota! Impossible no contagiar-se del seu entussiasme desfassat o de la seva sobrecollidora emoció amb les balades com "<em>Any other world" o "Happy Ending</em>". Un fi de festa a l'alçada d'un concert mític!</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="color:#008000;"><strong>El millor-&#62;</strong> </span>La versió del celebèrrim i arxiconegut clàssic dels Depeche Mode "<em>I just can't get enough"</em>. EL públic va entrar literalment en histèria col·lectiva... i jo el primer (vegeu video).<br />
<strong><span style="color:#ff0000;">El pitjor-&#62;</span></strong> Que tan sols tingui un disc i per tant no pugui fer els concerts més llargs, perqué relament ens vam quedar amb ganes de més!

<p style="text-align:justify;">I per acabar la festa i fer temps fins que obris el metro a les 6:00h DJ SUPERMARKET, que va convertir el recinte en una rave a ritme de Daft Punk, MGMT, Primal Scream o Prodigy.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>PD:</strong> Si, ja ser que estar a 1a fila és molt freak, però així compenso que a la MAdonna l'haurè de veure amb telescòpi!</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>PPD:</strong> Vaig aconseguir una pua de Morrissey (me la va tirar el guitarrista a la ma) i ara no la trobo dins la meva motxilla! Es injust!!</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;"><!--[if gte vml 1]&#62;                     &#60;![endif]--><!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]--><strong><span style="font-size:10pt;">Rain and tears</span></strong><span style="font-size:10pt;"> è stata un pò per caso la colonna sonora del maggio parigino. E’ figlia di <em>A wither shade of pale</em> dei Procol Harum, in un certo senso, perchè anche qui una melodia classica (stavolta Pachelbel) viene riarrangiata e asservita al pop. Gli <strong>Aphrodite’s Child</strong> erano un gran gruppo, con un ottimo cantante, Demis Roussos, e un tastierista che poi col nome di Vangelis avrebbe fatto fortuna scrivendo un sacco di colonne sonore di successo. Erano greci e questo li rende una specie di rarità, anche perchè non suonavano il sirtaki.</span></p>
