Indie Town was nice but Mash-Up town is even better. It's still a break from my usual electro-self, so it's all good. Anyway, I got some more B-Ju for you, I introduced you to him a while back with his "Played Out" mix and these mash-up's are another step in the right direction. As for the art, don't even think about hating on AA models...

The 1900's at the Sunset Tavern, Seattle | 2 September 2008

Chicago's 1900's are out on the West Coast for a short tour to bring their baroque pop sounds to the Pacific Northwest. Over the weekend they were up in Vancouver, BC to play the Malkin Bowl mini-festival in Stanely Park. I was surprised they didn't also play this past weekend's Bumbershoot festival here in Seattle. I suppose blame with the anomalies of booking. I'm sure the band would have rather played a jam packed venue at the Seattle Center instead of a spacious Sunset Tavern on Tuesday night. In any event, they played, and the small group of people at the Sunset were not disappointed.

The band number seven, crammed themselves onto the small stage which didn't leave very much room for movement, but they seemed to create a lot of heat nonetheless. They seem to get a lot of comparisons to Fleetwood Mac and guitarist Ed Anderson, brought this up saying the main difference between them and the Mac was that the 1900's do more coke. The band's alleged romantic entanglements aside, their amped up version of baroque pop does at times sound like Fleetwood Mac, but their sound also brings to mind bands like the Essex Green and Ladybug Transistor. Playing stuff from both their first ep Plume Delivery and album Cold and Kind and leaving out all of their slower songs, the band kept the energy high and the harmonies tight throughout the set. They sounded not as polished as their records, but that added to their charm and showed a more rock side of the band. Singers Jeannie O'Toole and Caroline Donovan harmonies were a highlight, but the entire band seemed to play the songs with a comfortable ease and enthusiasm that was infectious.

Cold and Kind came out last year, so the band have recently put out a 7 inch single containing a couple out takes from Cold and Kind as a stop gap between albums. Neither one of the songs from the new single were played Tuesday night, so here's one 'em.

Diplocodus DS10 Compo on MP3Death.us

Der Preis dürfte in Deutschland zwischen 30 und 40 Euro liegen.

(Tessa via American Apparel)

After looking at Tessa for the time it took me to prepare this post, I've decided that she defines indie. I have no reasons or arguments to support that conclusion, but yo, whatevs. I decided to switch it up from the usual electronica beats and let go of some out of genre tunes. I've been really sick of my usual stuff lately so I've been switching it up with Panda Riot, The L.E.D.'s, Beautiful Balloon, One For The Team and Now Now Every Children.

Chicago just trumped your city again, say hi to Panda Riot, the young, atmospheric trio my the Chi... Well, if you include the drum machine then its a quad-something. Thats neither here nor there, Panda Riot remind me of a cross between a "less poppy" Cut Copy and a "not as spacey" M83.

Panda Riot - Like Flowers At Night
Panda Riot - She Dares All Things

The L.E.D.s are a super talented bunch out of New Zealand. I dig the electronic/ indie combo, it makes for a great vibe and sensational listen. "Tide" is really easy to listen to and will probably get stuck in your head after a couple spins. Theres this synth sounding thing that follows the bass for a good portion of the song and boy does it sound nice!

The L.E.D.s - Tide

From the UK, ya'll! I get excited when people from across the world hit me up with stuff and since Beautiful Balloon are from Sheffield, United Kingdom (click here to find out where exactly that is), I got excited. I'm not sure if the band will take this as a compliment or not, but I really like the "unfinished" feel to the tracks. By that I mean they sound imperfect, which exposes character, which I'm a fan of. It reminds me of the days when I was in a band, practicing in each other garages and what not.

Anyway, get your electro-indie on with "Pixel Trippin'" and then get indie-indie with "Rip It Up". Drum machines for the win.

Beautiful Balloon - Pixel Trippin'
Beautiful Balloon - Rip it Up & Start Again

I posted both of these Afternoon Records jams a while ago, but in my quest for solid indie music on my iPod, these two stand out as staples in my collection. I said before and I'll say it again, Now, Now Every Children's "Friends With My Sister" is perfect. I apologize for the quality... Maybe you should just buy it. Oh and also a plus, the singers voice sounds super hot. I said it, what?! And now that I've made it super awkward in the case that I ever meet the band, lets just go ahead and wrap this thing up.

I don't have a detailed feeling about One For The Team, I just find my self saying "I am the best of aaaalll supporting actors" to myself at random points in a given day and I'd like to share that feeling.

Download Ohio by CocoRosie

It’s maybe a little embarrassing, but I think this is the first D. Jurado track I ever heard. That was summer, 2005; I can’t remember what I was then listening to, but however I’d missed Jurado’s stuff by then must’ve just been a continual case of being one street over. I love quiet, moody, acoustic guitar music (maybe not present tense anymore: I used to love it), and most of my friends are either really into or literally in (as in: working for venues and what-all) music, so it’s weird. Who knows.

CocoRosie, I remember, played some decent-sized part that summer, them and Keren Ann (her “For You and I” was about constant, I think), and an acquaintance confirmed that they were both (CocoRosie’s two people, two sisters who’d grown up separated and, according to the press copy, ran into each other in Paris, got together and started making music) really really pretty and really really weird. This version of this song just fucking slayed me and, shittily, it’s still the version I hear as ‘original’ when I think of this song.

Download What Were The Chances by Damien Jurado

I first heard this after seeing D Jurado and company at the World Cafe in Philadelphia, and I saw that show with a friend who had been, while in college, in a band with Jenna Conrad, Damien Jurado’s bassist and female singer. The awesome part was we got into the show for free; the far awesomer part was seeing this guy who I’d heard of, and had heard a little of, but got to see for the first time without prejudice or presumption. (*a note on that: one of the reasons I think McSweeney’s is such a good and smart place is because they’ve largely stayed from blurbs on their books: almost all the early ones had not a single thing on there. Remember You Shall Know Our Velocity? No blurb. It was the first book I got to read and decide about completely on my own).

Jurado, of course, blew my mind that night (as did Eef Barzelay, Jurado’s opener and the lead singer of Clem Snide and one of my favorite singer/songwriters), and then this song, on And Now That I’m In Your Shadow (which’d just come out, or was just about to come out, I can’t recall) blew my mind even more. I hadn’t listened closely to the words in a long time, but I was recently in Philadelphia, visiting the friend I’d seen the show with originally, and he told me he could only listen to the song two times in a row before it creeped him out so much. I concur.

Download Reservation by Jackaro

This is the band Jenna Conrad was in during college; that’s her singing the lead on this song (and that’s my friend in Philadelphia, Dan Capecchi, playing percussion in the background (he’s now the percussionist for ShotxShot, a jazz quartet well worth your time)); it’s been a couple years since I last listened to this but wanted to pull it out now that there’s a tenuous way to connect her old band to her new one.

The truth is, I can’t talk with anything like clarity about Jackaro: I’m so hopelessly biased I can’t even make that much sense about them. I can’t believe, listening to this song now, that they didn’t find more listeners (though they did find quite a few, in the Twin Cities and along the west coast). Who knows. At least they made music together when they had the chance.

I've been doing a few pretty heavily CCM-influenced worship groups lately, so why not add another to the mix, eh?

Phil Wickham is giving his whole live album Singalong away for free download to anyone who signs up for his newsletter (go here if you haven't yet). I know it's just a scam to get contacts, which translates into fans, money, popularity, and spread of his message. I know it's just one of the best, cheapest forms of advertising available, and I'm becoming a pawn of the marketing system by participating, but I don't care - Phil Wickham is still a really nice guy.

I'd heard of Phil Wickham about five years ago from a friend of mine who said, "Hey, you've gotta check out this guy Phil Wickham. He's amazing!" So I checked him out and thought, "Eh, he's not bad, but I'll pass."

Since then, however, he's been refining his sound and creating some great music. It's pop-rock worship stuff, but it's got a lot of passion to it. I really like the live Singalong album - recorded at Solid Rock Church in Portland, Oregon, on May 9, 2008, with 3000 fans present, it shows how passionate he is when he leads worship. Stripping away everything but Wickham, his guitar, and 3000 worshipers, I think the album captures the energy and excitement better than any of his other albums.

To get a glimpse of that passion and energy, check out this video of him playing the song "True Love" live in-studio. He also goes into a little background about the song.

Some of the songs on the album are pretty mellow and almost melancholy, but I really enjoy the album as a whole. There are a few really incredible worship songs here, like "Beautiful," "Because of Your Love," "Divine Romance," and "True Love." Man, this guy can write some great worship music.

What about Wickham himself? He seems like a really cool guy. According to Wikipedia, he grew up in a Christian home, with parents who had played in a Jesus People band. At twelve years old, Wickham began leading worship for his youth group, and later he began writing his own praise and worship songs. From there, he's recorded four albums and toured the world with the likes of MercyMe, Audio Adrenaline, David Crowder, and The Myriad.

Go ahead and download my two favorite songs and then head over to Phil Wickham's official site to get the whole Singalong album for free. I told you, he really is a nice guy:
