Mom Bean loves Springtime and so do we. Expecially chasing the critters around the yard. Dad Bean bought her a truck load of what she called "mater plants" (note red balls on the green thing in the orange pot). She didn't plan to grow them this year cuz the grasshoppers eat the leaves. YUCK! But Dad insisted he had a hankering for 'maters'. Whatever...

A solo show presenting the work of the Montreal-based media artist, featuring his most striking robotic and electronic installations. Curated by Heather Corcoran, Michelle Kasprzak and Gillian McIver.

Eric Raymond has been active in the field of electronic arts for over a decade, having exhibited widely in Canada and internationally, including the Absolut LA International Biennial Art Invitational (US) and Ars Electronica (Linz, Austria).

Raymond’s solo show explores the dynamic between technology and our natural world, and represents the first part of Schematic: New Media Art from Canada, a group exhibition opening in London later this year.

The initiative behind Schematic is to create an opportunity to present Canadian media art to London audiences and to open up new opportunities for Canadian artists. Schematic looks at the idea of "the artist as engineer" where the artist is also an "inventor" engaging with technology. At the same time, the artists and their works present a "Canadian" vision and perspectives, addressing ideas such as the relationship of nature and culture, climate, landscape and national mythologies.

I had an extra hour this week between sessions while attending a board of advisors meeting in San

I had an extra hour this week between sessions while attending a board of advisors meeting in San Francisco, so I walked two blocks to the Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA). I really love this structure and was here while it was under construction, then came back a couple of times after it opened. The finished product is an appropriate space for a modern art collection. It's constructed in perfectly even layers of black, gray, white, brown and blue. The modern interpretation of geologic strata found naturally in rocks of the west. Mostly straight lines and crisp angles, with curves sprinkled in to soften the experience and direct your eyes back into the main space of the building. None of the art can be seen without taking sharp turns. It's the opposite of the Guggenheim in NY, where the art can be viewed from almost anywhere, as if one was surveying the landscape. An oval eye is proped up on top of the structure, evoking a communications dish poised to collect radio waves from the cosmos.

There was a fascinating media art installation on the third floor entitled, Opposing Mirrors and Video Monitors on Time Delay. The artist is Dan Graham, and it was composed of two black and white television monitors, two video cameras and two large mirrors positioned on opposite sides of a wide gallery. As you approach, the camera records you, but holds it for a few seconds before feeding the video to a small TV screen. The result is a bit jarring. You move inquisitively toward the television screen expecting to see yourself but you don't. Suddenly you appear as you were a few seconds earlier, giving you an opportunity to study yourself in motion. It takes a while to notice what's going on, but once you get it, the brain lights up.

It's like that old trick where you are looking into what you believe to be a mirror, but in fact it's an opening, and someone else is facing you (your identical twin), pretending to be your reflection. That person mimics your body movements and facial expressions exactly, hoping to keep up the illusion. You then try to outsmart the reflection by making sudden, unexpected movements. In the trick it works, but in this installation, it's always you. I snapped this photo of me inside the monitor with my iPhone.

Eventually you start performing, to see what you look like. You move in for a close up and make faces. Travel from one side of the gallery to the other and do it all over again. The mirrors keep the image moving and changes the point of view, so you can see both your front and back. Kind of a reality show on yourself, but without the personal humiliation or prize money. Everyone that passed by was instantly engaged. This is the power of modern art; the viewer participates and the common perspectives are challenged.

Unfortunately I didn't have time to see much of anything else, but captured a few more images on the way back to the summit.

The second piece of writing I did about art - aged 17 - was a study of 4 portraits in the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art by Alexie Jawlenski, Oskar Kokoschka, Emil Nolde and the Scottish artist James Cowie. They were all painted around the same time - 1930s - and were portriats - one a self-portrait - and I was fascinated by the way they looked out of the image and the way that the viewer was asked to look back.

This interchange - between gaze and gazer has consistently fascinated me (and many other people) - but I new none of the theoretical ground work then about the pyscho-sexual power relationships played out in the act of looking and representing - replicating and repeating the gaze in art.

Golan Levin's Eye Robot is fun .....

The first piece of writing was a confusing ramble on the problem of time in Constable's Haywain ..... little did I know that this would also be another constant problem that I would return to in my thinking.... that's for another day

Įsibėgėja gana ambicingas projektas, kurio sumanymas jau pusantrų metų tupėjo mano ir Vytauto Michelkevičiaus galvose: kartu su VšĮ "Mene" pradedamas Levo Manovichiaus knygos "The Language of New Media" lietuviškos versijos leidybos projektas. Pagal jau patvirtintus projekto planus, knyga bus išleista iki šių metų pabaigos. Pirmasis knygos fragmentas jau publikuotas portale www.balsas.cc.

Be to, knygoje bus pateikiamas ir specifinių terminų bei sąvokų žodynėlis, kuris bus sudarytas išvertus knygos tekstą.

Man šis projektas veikiau panašus į žaidimą, kuriame per fotografiją ieškoma būdų pažinti „kitą“. Panašiu principu kažkada susipažinau su savo kaimynais. „Polocko 8“ (diplominis darbas, audio- video instaliacijoja, UMI galerija,2005). Todėl nudžiugau gavusi pasiūlymą dirbti šitame projekte. Noriu išbandyti savo santykį į žmogų per fotografiją. Džiugu, kad galiu išeiti ir stebėti – fiksuoti didesnes žmonių grupes (šiuo atveju - tautines mažumas).”

Berardo Carboni - Fly me / Volavola

bio:
Berardo Carboni (1975) has taken a degree in law, he is scenario writer and director, and he has made several shorts and documentary films that have been chosen for national and international festivals.
He has worked with Lara Favaretto to the making of videos for the art circuit; they have been awarded prizes inside important environments (Furla Prize, Venice, 2001; P.S. 1 studio program, Muma, New York, 2002). Together with Lara Favaretto he also worked in 2003 at his first full-length film, Buco nell'acqua, a TV-movie with Sandra Milo, produced by Mediatrade.
Currently he is working on the project "Fly me / Volavola"

Fly Me / Volavola - The Movie
Volavola is about human beings, emotions becoming inevitably dull, the want not to surrender to habit always striving for more, and that love in need to be kept alive and preserved from its natural decay. There are two films in Volavola, both of them with the same screenplay. However, the first film will be shot in 3-D computer graphics, also exploring the virtual worlds of Second Life. The plot, as it unravels, specifically aims to disorient the viewer when it becomes increasingly difficult to understand what is actually real and what is not. Real avatars and real people, interpreting themselves, plus fictional
characters, both computer generated and in flesh and blood, are all playing different roles throughout the entire picture. Finally, Volavola also deals in a sociological way, sometimes even surreal, with themes such as hacker ethics or the values shared in a virtual society, topics which are too often left out by science-fiction in general. The main message is to defend those values, as they play an important part in our cultural heritage by helping us to build a better place to live for everyone. The entire film will be set in Rome as the actual city and as a virtual one where it is now possible to meet characters coming from different virtual universes. The two films will be mirroring each-other. Although the pictures will be distributed through different medias.

Berardo Carboni who previously shot Shooting Silvio, wrote the script in collaboration whith the writer, Mario Gerosa author of the book Virtual Words and Second life, currently on its third reprint, chief-editor of "AD, architectural digest italia-" magazine and professor of cultural planning of the territory and comunication at the "Politecnico di Milano". Berardo Carboni. is also working on the direction of both parts of the production.

Nicolas Barrial - Basics of “building in Second Life”

Nicolas Barrial (Nick Rhodes in SL) build the virtual representation of La Cantine in Second Life.

La Cantine is a creative, experimental and innovative space dedicated to digital technologies, located in the center of Paris.

Both a place of exchange and a technological showcase, La Cantine is open to professionals, tech enthusiasts and everyday users. This place is dedicated to ascending innovation welcome all contributors to digital life. La Cantine favors the conception and emergence of new uses, products and services by accelerating ideas, creation and networked innovation.

A true collaborative platform, La Cantine is a new space for sharing experience and skills (co-working, art-oriented platforms, alternative venues, competitive clusters, specialized research labs, colleges and universities).

This desire to share and find new ways to collaborate made it natural to extend its activity to virtual worlds. One of the main partner of La Cantine being Orange, Orange Island sounded like the perfect place for implementation of the virtual Cantine.

At "La Cantine Virtuelle", you will attend mixed reality events with partners in Paris but also find content of innovative projects.

Terra Trance / Rinpa Eshidan

Sonic Acts XII festival takes place between 21 - 24 February 2008 in Amsterdam. The twelfth edition of this festival is devoted to The Cinematic Experience and includes an international conference, a wide range of concerts and performances, an exhibition and a diverse programme of films. The 2008 edition promises a comprehensive overview of the cinematic experience. Recent technological developments in digitalisation, higher-definition imagary and sound, ever-faster communication networks and new types of portable video players make it necessary to re-address the question of what cinema actually is. Developments such as experiential spaces, immersion and sublimation in contemporary music and visual arts add to the urgency of this question.

Is an avatar an inspired rendering of its creator's inner self, or is it just one among millions of anonymous vehicles clogging the online freeways? Can we use our avatars to really connect with people, or do they just isolate us?
