In fact IT is very useful (almost indispensible now that we've come to know and use it), but if you can't filter out what you don't want, it's not much help to you. Too much information is as bad and sometimes worse than no information at all.

If you're a webmaster or website owner trying to get your site listed on the major search engines, then you're in for a pretty rough ride. Even if you're a computer or IT geek (no offence intended to experts), don't think it's necessarily going to be easy. The major search engines change their algorithms all the time, so just because you get your site listed in the top few pages of Google this week, doesn't mean you'll be there next week - and it's extremely unlikely you'll get there in the first place unless it's in a paid advert that will likely cost you an arm and a leg. I'm not trying to suggest that the search engine companies are doing anything wrong. Indeed, when you look at what they're doing and why, it's difficult to see how they could do much different.

However, that doesn't help you and me much, does it? Somewhere along the line, we need a completely different take on this problem - and I only wish I had an answer because I'd be a billionaire in a very short space of time if I did.

So, if you think you know what to do, just tell me and I'll give you credit for the initial idea when I make a fortune from it ... honest! ;)

Fast lite vettiga saker har jag ändå fått gjort. Förutom att ha vräkt i mig godis har jag också suttit och programmerat lite. Så nu har jag faktiskt, nästan, lärt mig vad pekare är och hur dem fungerar.

However, you also hear a lot about the training of the workforce in the skills required to make the British economy "world class". I'm also starting to hear more about re-training.

As well as a Square Peg, at the ripe old ago of 50, I would also consider myself an Official Old Git. And as an Official Old Git (or "OOG" ?), one might be put in mind of that old adage about Old Dogs and New Tricks.

Not me. As noted here recently, I would lurve to learn more nuts and bolts techie stuff in the same way that I did when I was cutting my teeth in the IT world, almost 30 years ago. But realistically, there's little chance that I will be given the chance. (I'm still waiting for somebody to prove me wrong ...)

And I have always thought this ! Again, as noted in that same post the other day, I spent a couple of years coding around The Millennium Bug. However, towards the end of 1998, the big corporate players had done pretty much all of the most important Y2K work and were battening down the hatches to make sure that they would go through an "ordinary" year-end on 31st December 1998 before the "Big One" twelve months later.

So seeing that coming, I signed up for an intensive training course on the hot software of the time. This meant that after working some very high-pressure weeks on my then current assignment (away from home), I would drive up to London on Friday nights and crash in a Travelodge. I then spent all day Saturday in a class room learning about the software before driving home, throwing my laundry in to the washing machine, eating something from the take-away, collapsing in to bed in a heap and sleeping until midday on Sunday. I then rinsed and repeated for another nine weeks ! I gave up most of my weekday evenings to studying too. And a lot of cash too.

Result ? Yes, I got the qualification, the "blue riband" of its type in those days. Soon enough, the current engagement ended and after a short break, it was time to find another. I clutched my brand new certificate in my hand and hawked it around all the employment agents. And I applied for any other vacancies I could find in my new field.

How did I do ? To borrow from Eric Idle in the Monty Python Election Special sketch, I got nothing:  "Not a sausage ... bugger all."

Why ? You may already know, but before we go there, I'm reminded that in fact there was one interview. A fellow student heard of something nearby and passed word and I actually got called in. Soon after, I was politely shown the door and the reason given was the same as from all the other refusals. It was couched in more gentle language but basically, it was this:

"Yeah, you've got the certificate ... so what ? What have you actually done in the Real World using this stuff ?"

And in fairness, if you're an employer, it's a fair question.

A few years later, the same thing happened again, but this time with an employer to whom I was known of old. I was going to play on that by offering my services for a contract engagement at a very low rate. That way, I could get some real-world experience on my CV. This time, I did get an appointment for an interview, but at the last minute it was cancelled. A new broom in the Finance department had instigated a hiring freeze. :-(

In the end, another ex-employer spotted me and before long, I was back with them doing the same-old-same-old ... for which I was grateful. Well, you've got to pay the rent and put bread on the table, haven't you ?

And yes, it's happened again this year. Exactly the same.

And even last month, the same. I was sounding out a trainer about acquiring some more up to date technical skills. This guy promised me that with my experience and this qualification, the world would be my oyster. Just sign a cheque for a large four-figure sum ...

Hmmm.

The moral of the story ? Well, it's probably a good idea to re-train, to acquire new skills that make you a more valuable asset, more marketable, and so on ... But my experience is that it can be incredibly difficult to do this from the outside in (if you see what I mean).

It's the old Catch-22 of work: you can't get a job without experience and you can't get the experience until you have a job !

Google argues that current Web browsers were designed eons ago, before so many of the developments that characterize today's Web: video, scams and spyware,  viruses that lurk even on legitimate sites, Web-based games and ambitious Web-based programs like Google's own Docs word processor.

As Google's blog puts it, "We realized that the Web had evolved from mainly simple text pages to rich, interactive applications and that we needed to completely rethink the browser."

What this early version of Chrome accomplishes isn't quite that grand. With no status bar, no menu bar and only a single toolbar (for bookmarks), Chrome is minimalist in the extreme. At the moment, for example, there's no way to e-mail a Web page to someone, no full-screen mode, no way to magnify the page (rather than just the text), and no screen for organizing bookmarks. Google says that these features are at the top of its to-do list.

Chrome is, nonetheless, full of really smart features that seem to have been inspired by other browsers - or ripped off from them, depending on your level of cynicism.

Also under the hood are what Google considers some of Chrome's most important features - the security enhancements. Google says that each tab runs in its own "sandbox," so that if there's nasty spyware-type software running on one Web site, it has no access to the rest of your computer, or even the other tabs. Google asserts that this is much stronger protection than Internet Explorer 8 gives you, especially in Windows XP. (Internet Explorer 8 supplies its best protection only in Windows Vista.)

Released last Tuesday (September 2nd), the Chrome browser immediately grabbed 1 per cent of the market, according to Net Applications.

Internet Explorer accounted for 72.2 per cent of the browsers used in August to access the 40,000-plus sites Net Applications monitors. That was a drop of about 0.9 percentage points from July. Meanwhile, Firefox increased its share by about half a percentage point, climbing from 19.2 per cent in July to end August at 19.7 per cent. Other browsers also boosted their shares: Apple's Safari went from 6.1 per cent to 6.4 per cent, while Opera's share hit 0.74 per cent, up slightly from July's 0.69 per cent.

Google's entry into the browser software industry is seen by analysts as inevitable. Google relies upon the browser for its primary access path to users and the primary vehicle for delivering its ads. Not having control of the browser cedes control of this key element and its development path to competitors such as Microsoft.

An interesting and welcome feature of Microsoft’s new Internet Explorer 8 is its “privacy” mode. While the ability to browse privately is both a welcome development for consumers and also a feature of Chrome, it signaled a long-expected threat that Microsoft or Apple could interfere with software features critical to the functioning of the online advertising network/exchanges such as DoubleClick.

By developing its own browser Google can simply eliminate that threat.

После этого идем в "Драйвера устройств" (в Gnome это Система-Администрирование) и отрубаем все убунтовые дрова для карты, потому что они кривые =)
Потом ставим штуку под названием ndisgtk (для установки виндовых сетевых дров)
sudo apt-get install ndisgtk
Теперь качаем дрова под винду с сайта acer'a, запускаем ndisgtk (только с админскими правами)
sudo ndisgtk
там открываем *.inf файл из папки с дровами. Перезагружаемся, лезем в какую-нибудь софтину типа wi-fi радар или просто в настройки сети, и видим там пункт - "беспроводное подключение" =)

Varid menyimpulkan langkah operator itu didorong oleh perkembangan yang ada di antaranya cara berkomunikasi yang berubah dari tradisional menjadi Internet berkecepatan tinggi menuju Web 2.0,� yaitu era di mana Internet yang menjadi platform bukan lagi jaringan.

Menurut dia, Internet berevolusi dari konten biasa menjadi konten video atau IPTV telah memacu operator mengembangkan jaringannya sekaligus melihatnya sebagai peluang yang dianggap perlu dikelola dengan baik.

"Ini membutuhkan bandwidth dan performa sehingga mereka bertransformasi menuju all IP," jelasnya.

Varid menilai operator menghadapi sejumlah tantangan di antaranya kecukupan bandwidth, performa, kualitas layanan, skalabilitas, keandalan, dan keamanan. "Tantangan ini dalam jaringan yang terintegrasi dijawab dengan Metro Ethernet yang memungkinkan akses broadband menjadi optimum dan mampu membantu operator menyediakan layanan triple play [suara, data, dan video] bersamaan," paparnya.

Menurut Varid, dengan Metro Ethernet, operator dapat menjamin kualitas pengalaman pelanggan (quality of experience) dalam mengantarkan layanan broadband kepada korporasi melalui jaringan privat virtual yang didukung IP, memberdayakan base station menuju jaringan IP, menjamin kualitas layanan melalui penerapan backhaul bergerak dan menghantarkan layanan triple play ke pelanggan residensial serta menangani layanan Internet berbasis IP.

Metro Ethernet

Dia mengatakan layanan triple play merupakan kebutuhan komunikasi yang komprehensif dan hanya didapat� dengan berlangganan satu jenis media koneksi saja. Sebagai contoh, dengan berlangganan IPTV, konsumen dapat menikmati komunikasi data seperti Internet berkecepatan tinggi, telepon atau video conference pada saat yang bersamaan.

Menurut dia, Metro Ethernet dapat dimanfaatkan operator di jaringan tetap (fixed) maupun nirkabel dan tidak hanya bagi perusahaan-perusahaan yang sangat tergantung pada komunikasi data seperti untuk siaran video saja tetapi untuk penyimpanan data dan backup, e-learning, dan voice over IP.

Jaringan Metro Ethernet diklaim dapat menyalurkan Internet berkecepatan 10.000 Mbps atau 10 Gbps dalam jangkauan 50 km. Keunggulan lainnya dari teknologi itu adalah kemudahan pakai karena berbasis pada platform IP yang sudah memasyarakat.

Saat ini solusi Metro Ethernet Alcatel Lucent sudah digunakan 200 penyedia jasa layanan di lebih dari 90 negara dan mayoritas layanan Metro Ethernet di Indonesia diklaim didukung teknologi Alcatel-Lucent.
