Resetting PRAM and NVRAM

1. Shut down the computer.
2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
3. Turn on the computer.
4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
6. Release the keys.

Your computer's PRAM and the NVRAM are reset to the default values. The clock settings may be reset to a default date on some models.

Solution to fix your black screen camera on your MacBook:

1) Shut down your Mac.
2) Remove the battery and plug power sources.
3) Hold the on/off Power switch button on your Mac for 5 seconds.
4) Reconnect the battery and turn your Mac back on. That should re-enable your internal iSight camera.

Welcome to Burger Joint Theology: A look at Jesus in a fast-food culture.  The truth is, we live in a fast-food nation.  I got this excerpt from a New York Times article written by Eric Schlosser:

In 1970, Americans spent about $6 billion on fast food; in 2000, they spent more than $110 billion. Americans now spend more money on fast food than on higher education, personal computers, computer software, or new cars. They spend more on fast food than on movies, books, magazines, newspapers, videos, and recorded music - combined.

Some stats say that over half of all money spent on food is spent in fast food.  We live in a fast food nation.  Unfortunately, the fast food concept has invaded our lives and changed the way we interact with people, travel and make political decisions.  The most unfortunate of these, I would say, is how it has affected our view on God.  We now want a God who can provide quick answers and fast solutions and do it with bright lights and lots of color, instead of a God that is real and true and trustworthy and constant. 

In Burger Joint Theology, I intend to look at how the American view of God has changed, what it means for us today, and how it is different from the Biblical view of God. It should be a wild ride, but I’m excited we’re on it together.

In pratica dovete copiarvi il file del firmware e dovete patcharlo, il file si trova nella directory del Mac indicata in questo link:

lo dovete copiare in una directory (si suggerisce /lib/firmware) e poi seguire le istruzioni che vi porteranno ad installare un pacchetto dal nome isight-firmware-tools che vi chiede la directory in cui avete copiato il vostro firmware per poterlo patchare.

2008-10-11 update

I'm just finishing an hour of testing here. I have two webcams, one integrated in my laptop (Mac Book Pro) and one as a separate, USB webcam (Philips ToUCam 740, a common and good model), and none of them work. The iSight itself is recognized by the Flash plugin, but as soon as I accept to use it, the browser crashes...

I have reported the problem with the ToUCam 740 on the developer's blog (like many people do) and proposed my assistance in testing it, but as usual, no reply, nothing. It's been a few weeks now since I posted the report, and obviously other people had the same problem with the same webcams (the iSight problem was reported about 3 times).

Anyway, I just wanted to report that maybe I had placed my hopes a little too high on this new Flash player version...

On to other news. I uploaded some nice pictures on flickr and a video that took me ALL DAY to make. I am not as pleased on how it came out but I really wanted to make it. Maybe I will do a remix of the video some years from now. Also zac might not get back with the checked copy of the first chapter. Hopefully this will not take this long for a 1 page and a half chapter!

Посещая мою любимую девушку на прошлой неделе (мы живем в разных городах, на разных побережьях) мы игрались с приложением для моего iPhone Touch под названием Locations. Программка довольно простая - поиск и просмотр веб камер со всего мира. Можно сохранить какое-то количество камер и она их будет периодически обновлять.

Рассматривая камеры в Милане да Париже мне захотелось сделать что-нибудь подобное для себя - онлайн веб камеру. Я подобными вещами никогда раньше не занимался, да и на поиски в интернете времени тратить особенно не хотелось (все что нашел - какие-то сложные сервисы с live video и прочими вкусностями, но всё какое-то слишком перегруженное). Так что решил сделать это сам. В итоге ушло минут 10-15, и вот что мы получили в результате:

Страничку накидал очень быстро, просто чтобы как-то отобразить время последнего обновления.

Как это все работает, и как сделать такоё же

Всё до безобразия просто. Просто - если у вас Макбук. Про остальные системы чуть ниже.

Первым делом нам понадобится isightcapture. Скачиваем, копируем в /usr/bin/.

Далее, нам нужно научиться делать снимки и сохранять их локально. Тут нет ничего сложного: открываем терминал и пишем:

isightcapture ~/current.jpg

Эта команда сделает фотографию того, что видит камера и сохранит её как current.jpg в вашей домашней директории.

Самое интересно состоит в загрузке получившейся фотографии на какой-нибудь сервер. Это так же и является наверное самым сложным этапом. У меня есть домашний сервер с уникальным IP адресом\своим доменом, у кого-то есть свои хостинги с SSH доступом, но у большинства ничего этого нет. Что делать? Читайте самый низ этого поста.

Ну а для тех у кого есть доступ к каким-нибудь серверам - давайте воспользуемся scp. Налаживает необходимые public keys дабы не вопрошало пароль (очень хорошая статья на эту тему), и в терминале пишем:

scp ~/current.jpg media.mywebserver.com:/home/mywebserver/media/webcam/

Эта команда загрузит ваш файл на ваш же сервер в нужное место. Это я тут пишу для полноты рассказа, ведь скорее всего если вам есть куда загружать файл по ssh протоколу вы и без меня знаете как это сделать :)

Автоматизация этих простых двух шагов заключается вот в чем. Первым делом создайте где-нибудь, скажем в ~/Scripts файл под названием, к примеру, webcam.sh. Далее поместите в него обе команды:

isightcapture ~/current.jpg

scp ~/current.jpg media.mywebserver.com:/home/mywebserver/media/webcam/

Первая строка говорит о том, чем именно нужно запускать этот файл. Узнать где у вас находится bash можно написав в Терминале which bash. Сохраните файл, и теперь откройте терминал и добавьте запись в кронтаб (командой crontab -e):

*/1 * * * * sh ~/Scripts/webcam.sh

Это заставит крон вызывать ваш маленький скрипт каждую минуту. Подробнее про крон почитать можно вот тут.

На сервере можно теперь, к примеру, создать веб страничку которая будет отображать картинку current.jpg так как вам этого захочется. Из неё самой можно выдергивать информацию о том когда она была создана. К примеру вот так, на PHP:

Получится то, что видно сверху на скриншоте.

Так как при каждом обновлении с вебкамеры файл перезаписывается, картинка на веб странице тоже будет обновляться вместе с этой информацией.

А если не мак осх?

Конечно же далеко не у всех маки с камерами iSight. Тут я вам не в помощь, так как у меня к сожалению нет времени на поиски консольного софта для снятия фотографий с вебкамер под Windows или даже под другие *nix системы. Наверняка софт какой-нибудь есть, наверняка есть и бесплатный. Многие вебкамеры идут с подобными программки (так мне рассказывали, сам не пробовал - не знаю), так что возможно вы как-нибудь воспользуетесь ими. Пишите в комментарии если хотите поделится инструкциями для других систем, было бы интересно почитать.

А как-нибудь проще можно?

Я понимаю что для многих это по той или иной причине будет не совсем доступно, пусть и достаточно гибко. К примеру, моя любимая теперь сможет смотреть как я работаю или же пью кофе где-нибудь в кафе в гавани Виктории, но вот я не смогу посмотреть как она занимается в центре Торонто. Хотя бы по этому я постепенно начал делать небольшой онлайн сервис, который упростит задачу до двух простых шагов: регистрация + установка маленькой программки. Программка эта будет делать фотографии с камеры и посылать их на сервис, а он же будет их отображать избранным (или же всем подряд) людям. Можно будет настроить временной интервал, степень публичности момента (показывать всем, только друзьям, только избранным), ну и еще пару вещей.

Всё это имеет смысл интегрировать с сервисами вроде Twitter'a (о котором я как-то писал), и тогда получится вполне себе неплохой инструмент для слежки за близкими людьми :)

Следите за обновлениями, думаю через несколько недель запущу что-нибудь для публичного тестирования. Ну или найду что-нибудь готовое и расскажу вам всем об этом =)

Investigadores y developers han desarrollado un sistema Open Source (En tu cara Microsoft) para rastrear una lap top perdida de manera gratuita, este servicio se llama Adeona.

Perder tu lap top en estos dias es como perder parte de tu vida: Le dices adios a tus fotos, juegos, archivos y demas cosas (incluido el porno, nooo) peor aun si tu lap top es de tu trabajo, eso significaria una brecha de seguridad grande para tu empresa y probablemente puedas hasta perder el empleo.

Pero ahora investigadores y desarrolladores de la University of Washington y la University of California en San Diego, han encontrado la manera de darte una oportunidad de recuperar tu lap top y tu vida (y probablemente tu empleo). El Lunes planean lanzar un servicio open source que podra rastrear tu lap top, el servicio se llama Adeona el cual es gratis y privado.

Nombrado asi en honor a la Deidad Romana que guia a los niños perdidos de vuelta con sus padres, Adeona usa software que ha estado en desarrollo desde el año pasado.

Asi es como trabaja: El usuario baja el software cliente en su lap top, lo ejecuta y ya. El Adeona comenzara a enviar notas encriptadas de manera anonima acerca de donde esta la computadora, que servidores utiliza, etc. Si la lap top se pierde el dueño baja otro programa, teclea su usuario y contraseña y recoge los datos que la lap top ha enviado, desde un servicio de almacenamiento gratuito que ha estado por años llamado OpenDHT.

La version MAC del Adeona usa tambien un programa llamado isightcapture el cual toma fotos de las partes en donde se esta usando la lap top a travez del Isight.

Adeona no provee exactamente el domicilio o el telefono de la persona que robo o usa tu lap top, pero te dice el IP (Internet Protocol) que tiene que si es usado de manera correcta se puede rastrear facilmente para localizar la posicion geografica real de tu lap top, la policia tiene esta tecnologia y se puede detener al malechor dice Tadayoshi Kohno, profesor asistente de la University of Washington. "Una vez que recuperes la informacion de tu lap top enviada por Adeona, probablemente quieras llevarla a la policia."

El servicio se ve bastante interesante, y aunque influyen mucho las circunstancias (ya que los ejemplos se dan en un marco imaginario y tu lap top no la roba un hacker que formatea el Disco Duro o no usa Proxy By pass) y no todas las veces se puede recuperar una lap top de esta manera si es un gran paso hacia adelante para poder, en un futuro no lejano, recuperar los objetos perdidos.... mmmm, pensandolo bien, tambien se podria utilizar en otros productos..... que tal como un carro, que por donde pase y exista una señal Wireless (que ya existen muchas con eso de los AMPM que las dan gratis) te enviara informacion de donde esta..... mmmm seria una buena idea, ustedes que piensan mis queridos geeks.

I as literally running around ALL day and then I cooked some food and afterwards I posted some QUICK FLASH CREATIONS on flickr which I must say look very good considering that they were produced with isight on my macbook and then thrown in photoshop for a flash edit!. I'm liking this idea of producing images because at the moment I have NO time at all with the maintence work on the house and I can produce images at a fast speed which fulfills my creative urges! and sometimes great art comes from really impulsive and intuitive working processes.

Logitech has announced its latest flagship cam that is Mac only :D. The QuickCam Vision Pro is USB 2.0, works with Skype and iChat, sports a 2.0 megapixel lens and a Carl Zeiss lens. It can also record VGA video at 30 fps.

I already have an iSight in my MacBook but I'd like to have another camera for webcasting. :D

These will hit shelves in July for $130. I'll have to wait on this one since I'm getting another important product in July.

You can open the .strings file with either TextEdit, or a simple Quicklook, but either it its’ very clear that:

Appears there plain as day. This doesn’t guarantee the release of a USB iSight HD camera, but it certainly lends a bit of validity to the idea that Apple plans to release one soon.

Hoy uno de los rumores más sonados que circula por la comunidad mac internacional es el hallazgo por parte de Macrumors de unas referencias en un fichero de configuración de QuickTime a una “iSight HD”, es decir lo que podría ser una nueva versión mejorada de nuestras iSight con alta definición.

Sea en verdad o no, un posible hallazgo con base real lo que seguro es, que Apple va a ver el interés que toda la comunidad tiene ya desde hace mucho por una nueva iSight externa, a ser posible ya de pedir yo como siempre pediría que tuviera conexión ethernet para ya puestos sacarle verdadero provecho no  solo a través de iChat o iMovie.

La iSight nació como cámara externa halla por el 2004 según he podido encontrar en la documentación de Apple, nació como cámara externa pues de aquella nadie había podido aun integrar una cámara en un ordenador, y todas eran externas. Nació como toda un estrella pues su resolución era VGA de 640×480 y se conectaba a diferencia del resto de cámaras por puerto firewire. Hecha de una aleación de aluminio y con objetivo de autoenfoque en planos cortos de hasta 50 mm o en largos hasta el infinito, lo cual dejaba muy atrás a toda la competencia cuyas resoluciones andaban por los 320×280 y conexiones usb 1.1.

En 2006 la cámara iSight fue retirada del mercado europeo al salir una nueva normativa sobre materiales tóxicos. Tras este golpe Apple saco una nueva versión que fue capaz de integrar en las nuevas versiones de iMac y en los nuevos portátiles supuestamente con otros materiales alternativos y no tóxicos, pero que no tenía ninguna nueva característica. Esta nueva versión fue comercializada hasta 2007 momento hasta cual aun convivía con la antigua iSight externa en el mercado americano donde todavía se comercializaba.

En 2007 llego al fin una versión mejorada de la iSight que aumentaba la resolución a 1280× 1024 y además tenía por primera vez una resolución fotográfica de 1.3 Mp. A partir de entonces desapareció también del mercado americano la antigua iSight externa y con ella los maqueros nos quedamos un poco en precario a la hora de hacer videoconferencias pues solo teníamos un posible ángulo de emisión al venir ya la cámara integrada lo cual empeora o empobrece mucho la calidad  o posibilidades de las Videoconferencias.

Así que empezaron a surgir un mercado de cámaras de otras marcas y Apple saco revisiones de software para iChat y que pudieran utilizarse cámaras de conexión usb de otras marcas pues sino dejaba sin posibilidad de hacer videoconferencia a los usuarios del Mac Mini o del Mac Pro que han tenido que buscarse la vida desde entonces, y ya han pasado dos años. De la iSight actual lo más curioso es que Apple prácticamente no ha hablado de ella ni de sus mejoras en comparación con primera versión, es un tema olvidado, no mencionado, y que hasta hoy parecía al menos condenado al olvido. 

En fin, que esperemos que pronto Apple se decida y nos alegre la vida a los maqueros con una nueva iSight externa de mayor resolución que haga que no tengamos que buscar otras cámaras alternativas de peor calidad y más difícil integración con nuestro software. Esperemos que este rumor se haga realidad en este 2008, y por Dios! que le pongan una conexión ethernet.
