" "- Modernism was characterized by humanist rationality - the search for "universal" truth - think of Descartes, Voltaire, Spinoza, Darwin, etc."

In the quest for learning and exploring, as humans are naturally driven to do, Modernism found itself in the midst of a technological revolution: Industry. Of course the Modernists started to explore their reality in a flat way. Why continue working in three dimensions when you can consider the medium itself, offering a new sort of validity? The Modernists, like every era, were seeking Truth. They were no longer interested in depicting pictorial images because the "truth" was that "this is a canvas" or "this is paint from a tube" or "this is wire" or any sort of self-referencing material is what it is and nothing more than that."//fluxusblog

demand for certainty: only indubitable knowledge counts

rejection of external authority: they are irrelevant to knowledge

affirmation of reason: attain certainty by speculative reasoning (rationalism) or by reason analyzing experience (empiricism)

"Descartes never married. He took a Dutch servant girl, Helen, as his mistress in 1634. He had a natural daughter, Francine, by her.
"He had a daughter Francine, but he wasn't much of a family guy. He was really tied up in his work, and never really got married. He was a lonely guy and lived by himself. Because of his loneliness, it is said that he constructed a mechanical robot of a person that was his companion in life."/yahoo-answers

"In 1635 Descartes's daughter Francine was born to Helena Jans and was baptized in the Reformed Church in Deventer. Although Francine is typically referred to by commentators as Descartes's “illegitimate” daughter, her baptism is recorded in a register for legitimate births. Her death of scarlet fever at the age of five was the greatest sorrow of Descartes's life. Referring to her death, Descartes said that he did not believe that one must refrain from tears to prove oneself a man."//Britannica

"He was travelling, he told his companions, with his young daughter Francine; but the sailors had never seen her, and, thinking this strange, they decided to seek her out one day, in the midst of a terrible storm. Everything was out of place; they could find neither the philosopher nor the girl. Overcome with curiosity, they crept into Descartes's quarters. There was no one there, but on leaving the room, they stopped in front of a mysterious box. As soon as they had opened it, they jumped back in horror: inside the box was a doll-a living doll, they thought, which moved and behaved exactly like a human being. Descartes, it transpired, had constructed the android himself, out of pieces of metal and clockwork. It was indeed his progeny, but not the kind the sailors had imagined: Francine was a machine. When the ship's captain was shown the moving marvel, he was convinced, in his shock, that it was some instrument of dark magic, responsible for the weather that had hampered their journey. On the captain's orders, Descartes's "daughter" was thrown overboard. "//A Magical History of the Quest for Mechanical Life

""Descartes’ Baby". The more obvious reason for the title is that I claim that people are mind-body dualists, and so they naturally hold a philosophy that's most famously associated with René Descartes. In this sense, we are all Descartes’ babies. But there is another reason for the title that relates to disgust and similar emotions.

It is based on a story that was told about Descartes after he died. Descartes was never popular; he had a lot of enemies when he was alive, and even more after he died, and the story about him is weird and faintly nasty. It was known that Descartes had an illegitimate daughter, Francine, who died when she was five years old; this was said to be the greatest tragedy of his life. The story went that Descartes was so struck with grief that he created an automaton, a mechanical doll, built exactly identical to his dead daughter. The two were inseparable. He took this mechanical doll with him wherever he went. It was kept in a small trunk, and wherever he slept she was by his side. The story is that Descartes was crossing the Holland Sea, and the captain of the ship became very curious about the contents of this trunk that Descartes always had by his side. One night the captain crept down to his cabin while he was sleeping and opened up the trunk. To his horror the robot Francine arose. The captain, struck with revulsion, grabbed her, dragged her up to the deck of the ship and threw her overboard."//natural-born dualists

"In the summer of 1637 Descartes made some arrangements for his daughter Fransintgen (1635–1640) and her mother Helena to join him"/"There is no other evidence that Descartes had any plans to live in Amersfoort, a city at 20 km northeast of Utrecht. But he may have visited his daughter Fransintgen there, who, according to Baillet, died in Amersfoort on 7 September 1640"/Quaestiones Infinitae/PDF

"Helena Jans was the mother of René Descartes child... Descartes would have had to convert to Calvinsm to do that(marry her), and would he have done that, the preachers would have hooted the news to high heaven. They didn´t, so Descartes and Helena were not married"//Richard Watson

DANSE magnet - commence fluxus dansing.

saturday June 21, 2008 15H (3pm)
Fountain Saint Michel

Ladies and Gentleman,

I'm not a performer - I don't want your money. I'm an artist and I want you to danse with me. Take 5 minutes out of your day an celebrate life and one another. Join me and be a DANSE magnet.

There are many forms that Danse magnet will take on, but the intentions are the same. In a crowded metropolitian area during the busiest time of day, I will use either the model of flash mob, or fluxus methods to encourage persons to DANSE with me/us for just one song. The basics of the inspiration of this piece is personal - walking with my mp3 player and just wanting to break out dancing in public, and social - when this happens to me it causes me to reflect on how non-celebratory we humans approach every day. Why should we wait for a reason to dance with eachother? Isn't today- right this minute - reason enough?

FLASH MOB method:
A "happening", from the eye of the viewer: on a busy street all of a sudden drummers appear like gangbusters and then people around you start spontaneously dancing. This should last one song and then the drummers disappear and the danseurs go back to walking down the street. As the viewer - did you danse or not?

FLUXUS method:
June 21 2008 is Fête de la musique here in paris. Which means there will be good and bad music being played all over the city. I will take this opportunity to showcase this piece (my first performance piece!!). I've edited it down to be simpler to complete and to take advantage of the festival. In one of the busiest meeting places in paris - The Fountain at St. Michel 15H (3PM) I will play an intro song to gather a crowd. I will then explain my intentions Then I will play the song and begin to dance in an encouraging manner.

If anyone has ANY suggestions or advice PLEASE leave a comment or email me. This is the first performance I'll be doing and it's a crap shoot. If you live in paris, stop by!

intro song: Creepy Girls by Apes and Androids

danse song: Carmensita by Devendra Bandhardt

The supporting information for this project can be read in the afterbirth.

A new collage reminiscent of the 80's color xerox phase I was once deeply entrenched in. You might call this a Quflux. Also posted in a new site/group I was invited to join, via the European mailArt commmunity, called fluxLISTeurope. The original russian stamp can be seen at magentALTERego... possibly where the raven sleeps at night... or roosts and fidgets with widgets and photo slideshows. Also reactivated flickr recently so expect to see more there too. Peace.
I don't know how I failed to mention that my fiancé and I went to see Gram Rabbit a local Joshua Tree band...here in Santa Barbara. WOW we had fun. We (Shirley, Jill, Doug, Christian and Madison) danced and a great time was had by all. Thank you Jessica Rabbit!!! Your wings were gorgeous!!! She had fabulous wings of glitter that possessed a real fairy quality. They even sang Devil's Playground...and HOT Pink Hawaii, one of magentaRaven's favorites!!!

Shopping for records and cds in Berlin can prove really fruitful.

Shopping for records and cds in Berlin can prove really fruitful.

Staalplaat

Starting chronologically. The first 'boutique' record store I visited during my very first hours in Berlin was the 'notorious' newly opened Staalplaat store, home also of Staalplaat label. Unusual and rather artistic in its approaches and tastes. Browse around while stumbling on variety of weird objects, rest you eyes on peculiar wall paintings and of course look everywhere [from old fridges and drawers to just plain selves for every audible curiosity you may or may not imagine. Alga Marghen boxes and cds, Col Legno, ridiculously small pressings of home productions, French avant-rock, PSF + other Japanese beauties, Luc Ferrari, Merzbow, Legendary Pink Dots, Evan Parker and a whole lot more.. Serve yourself a cold beer from the fridge and make sure that you have lot of time to spend.

Check pictures:

Address: Torstraße 68, 10119 Berlin

Opening hours : Tue-Sat: 14.00-19.00

Neurotitan

On the end of an alley, out of the dreams of an urban fetishist, lies the entrance to Neurotitan. Up a couple of floors using the stairs, walking by tattered and painted walls you reach the store. Not simply a record store but literally an art store. Featuring small edition books and magazines, comics and unique art pieces along with records and cds. There is also a separated space used as gallery equipped with a bar. Sparse furniture and open spaces, feels like a loft. Concerning music there is an expectable selection ranging from extreme electronics and noise, to improvisation and industrial. Look closely for some rare specialties. A lot of gabba and breakcore on wax. Shop around to your heart's content and rest assured that everything you buy is or feels unique.

Check pictures:

Address: Rosenthalerstraße 39, 10178 Berlin

Opening hours: Mon-Sat: 12.00 - 20.00, Sun: 14.00 - 19.00

[gelbe] Musik

Far from uber-hip Mitte [as if wilfully, to make a statement] [gelbe] Musik can be found. As minimal as it gets starting from the plain sign that reads Musik to the inside of the store neat, simple and tidy. Home of the 'serious' avant-garde. Its boxes and selves are crammed with old magazines, books, cassettes, vinyl records and of course cds [most of them due to their volume are available only as booklets for browsing] of intellectual music, contemporary composers, free improvisation releases and some Fluxus audio documents. There is also a decent selection of ethnographic audio recordings and even some early music. You can of course hear to anything that interests you while looking for more. In case you are the only customer at the moment [probably not only then] you can enjoy what you have already chosen not through restricting headphones but on the shop's speakers for complete freedom of movement. Owned and run by Ursula Block, whom you can see working on her sleek ibook one moment and the other one hear her typing on her typewriter. A visit to [gelbe] Musik is more than essential, dmtls was impressed.

Check pictures [dmtls 'on the work']:

Address: Schaperstraße 11, 10719 Berlin

Opening hours: Tue-Fri: 13.00-18.00, Sat: 11.00-14.00

There is no website but there is an email gelbe[dot]musik[at]berlin[dot]de for mailorder.

KulturKaufhaus Dussmann

Finally there is KutlurKaufhaus Dussmann. It is your one stop for everything from books and DVDs to music. A huge, multileveled store open from 10.00-24.00 daily except Sundays. A big selection of everything you might ask with a lot of 'New Music' titles on separate department found on the classical floor. Not really that cheap when it comes to common editions and releases [compared to other chain record stores / super markets] but with many many interesting titles in its inventory. There is also a cafe that might [probably] come in handy.

Address: Friedrichstraße 90, 10117 Berlin

There is also Cover, advertised as the biggest used cd and records seller/buyer in Berlin. Not really impressive on cd collection, nor on vinyls. There are although many 'classic' classical and opera vinyls rather cheap and a fairly good choice of hardcore/punk and techno/electronic on wax. For some cheap cds [seen cheaper] you should try one of the Saturn chain stores. Lastly you can always try your luck in flea markets.

Isragirl Presents : Oren Cohen Ninyo Chair, Photo by Walla!

Some twenty four artists, writers and celebrities joined together for a special street art exhibition taking place at Rabin's square, Tel Aviv, in support of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks. If in Israel for business or pleasure, make sure you don't miss this unique event organized by ONeVoice - an NGO active both in Israel and the Palestinian Authority. The name of this exhibition is best translated: "Until smoke comes out the peace pipe" and it calls for Israeli and Palestinian leaders to resume the peace talks and to stay at the negotiation table until peace prevails in the region.

The joint-installation will include 24 chairs, 2 meters high each, designed by famous artists, poets, chefs and other famous Israeli personas. The chairs will be placed around an enormous table symbolizing the peace negotiations table. OneVoice aspires to expose and empower the wide - but sometimes silent -majority of Israelis and Palestinians who support the idea of two countries - Israel and Palestine - living in peace side by side. The design of each chair reflects the personal interpretations of the artists to the tricky process of bringing peace to a region afflicted with mistrust on the one hand and hope on the other.

Where and when: Rabin's Square, Tel Aviv, April 25-28

Isragirl Tip: While visiting the square look up to the roof of Tel Aviv city hall building...You will see a gigantic ballooned Duck, known to Israelis as "HaBarvaz" (the duck) - a famous cartoon character created by cartoonist Dudu Geva who died 3 years ago. The duck was loved by many Tel-Avivians and the city decided to help Geva's children commemorate their father's vision for Tel Aviv by allowing the huge duck to sit on the roof for two weeks...

I usually do "Let's Go Shopping" on Mondays, but honestly there wasn't anything worth reporting, so I'm glad I waited until this beautiful Earth Day morning to post as the really great sales didn't come in until late last night. So without further ramblings, let's get right to it.

SHOP ROBERTSON

24 HOUR SALE @ SHOP ROBERTSON - APRIL 22, 2008. Use code "aprilshowers" for an additional 30% off all merchandise. Offer expires 4.23.08. If you haven't shopped Shop Robertson, you're missing out. This is one of my favorite places to shop online. They've got a great selection, a great sale rack, and great customer service. They also regularly have sales (like this one) worth shopping.

The Fluxus Short Sleeve Pullover Hoodie with V-front & pockets is cool at $67.90 (orig. $97)

I'm ga-ga over this GEREN FORD SEERSUCKER DRESS, normally $238 (way more than I'd like to pay for a summer dress), but with the "aprilshowers" discount it's only $166.60 and is suddenly worth serious consideration!

Moving to the Robertson Rack, I like the TART BIRKIN MOMO DRESS on sale for $56, marked down to $39.20 after discount!

The GODDIS NAPLES CARDIGAN in Lagoon is a steal at $101.50 (orig. $207 ->on sale $145).

RAVINSTYLE

20% OFF ALREADY REDUCED SALE ITEMS. Use code "twentyoff" at check-out for discount. No word on when this offer ends, but better to err on the safe side (read: shop now). Definitely some great pieces at great prices here:

Like these FARYL ROBIN TALULLAH FLATS in violet crackle metallic. Originally $138, on sale for $60, yours for $48.

In a strange and compelling exhibition at the National Gallery of Modern Art, full of odds and ends

In a strange and compelling exhibition at the National Gallery of Modern Art, full of odds and ends intermingling with profound insights that presuppose a familiarity with the language of art and its ancestry, two pieces stood out more than others. The first, truly captivating to see was a representation of John Cage’s 4’33” on paper. In 1952 4’33” redefined the idea of music/sound/noise, and I can't help but think that in 2008 what we need is an equivalent for the music video. Blackout.

The second piece is by George Brecht. And one ought, really, to let it speak for itself:

TWO EXERCISES

Consider an object. Call what is not the object 'other'.

Exercise: Add to the object, from the 'other', another object, to form a new object and a new 'other'. Repeat until there is no more 'other'.

Exercise: Take a part from the object and add it to the 'other', to form a new object and a new 'other'. Repeat until there is no more object.
