I apologize in advance because this will be a dry statement of my opinions on this topic without much humor, wit, or sarcasm.

The Palin half of the ticket has been launching some pretty inappropriate attacks that have only been fueled further by FOX news. After calling Obama friends with domestic terrorists, she was called out on it, and only defended it by repeating it. Pretty pathetic, right? It is insulting that that's how low of an opinion she has about our collective intelligence. But it worked on so many people it just amazes me. With the aid of FOX news, namely, Sean Hannity, it was the Ayers "scandal" was perpetuated and repeated and now some people believe that Obama must be buddy buddy best friends with him and other domestic terrorists who hate America and went to WAR with America.

Is this really how far we've come? We're going to be as petty as we can and treat the highest office in the nation, and dare I say, world with this sort of immature contempt?

The effects of this spread fast. Friday, the 10th of October, a man at a McCain town hall style event got up and made a couple stupid coy jokes and said he was scared to bring his daughter up under an Obama presidency. I mean, seriously, is this best political discourse some people can come up with? Another woman later on just laid it out and said it. She said... that she's a racist. Basically. Faulting Obama and his campaign for being an ARAB, McCain cut her off and defended Mr. Obama from the second distressingly ignorant insult-in-the-form-of-a-question of the day. People in the audience demanded McCain show no mercy, and when he said he would remain respectful, the assholes actually got pissed off. Are they supporting their candidate, or just reveling in the opportunity to hate and spout off whatever uneducated garbage comes to mind?

I have to say, despite the lower level of commitment to clean and fair campaigning for the last few months, McCain showed some true guts today. Getting booed at his own fucking rally, he defended his opponent and defended clean and respectful politics. I liked that. A lot. It doesn't excuse him for not always playing fair, but at least he drew a clear line where he would venture no further into the dark slanderous campaign path. It certainly doesn't make up for all the ridiculous stunts some of the more outspoken and hostile groups have pulled, in their own names though, not under Mr. Mccain's banner.

So I say again, Good for you, Mr. McCain. It took some real character to take on your own booing audience for a good cause. You said you were commited to a clean campaign in the beginning, and that's how it should remain. It speaks better of both parties when both commit to it, and it demonstrates America's good grace and our values and virtues. It's frankly, rather embarrassing to see smear tactics.

But what is a gnome?  Good question. According to Dickinson, my lovely dictionary: An imaginary creature in fairy tales that looks like a little old man, or a small statue of a gnome in a garden.

I'm sorry Dickinson. YOU ARE GODDAMN WRONG. Gnomes are positively EVERYWHERE! There are even garden gnomes on The Sims, and there's a gnome avatar on popular website neopets. Does anyone realize that there's enough of them to take over the world? They're even right next to those sharp gardening tools! KEEP THOSE GNOMES NEXT TO YOU AT ALL TIMES PEOPLE.

And lastly, in America, a man was arrested for having naked gnomes in his garden.  So, today's post's moral is... GNOMES CAN GET YOU ARRESTED.

Every year, on the evening of October 31st, millions of children across North America paint their faces, dress up in costumes, and go from door to door in order to collect treats. The adults often decorate their houses with ghostly figures, carve scary faces on pumpkins, and put candles in them to create 'Jack-O-Lanterns.' Unfortunately, among the millions of North Americans partaking in this custom, many are Muslims. This article will shed some light on the significance and origins of Halloween, and why Muslims should not participate in it.

Origins of the Halloween Festival

The ancient Celtic (Irish/Scottish/Welsh) festival called Samhain is considered by most historians and scholars to be the predecessor of what is now Halloween. Samhain was the New Year's Day of the pagan Celts. It was also their Day of the Dead, a time when it was believed that the souls of those who had died during the year were allowed access into the 'Land of the Dead.' Many traditional beliefs and customs associated with Samhain continue to be practiced today on the 31st of October. Most notable of these customs are the practices of leaving offerings of food and drink (now candy) to masked and costumed revellers, and the lighting of bonfires. Elements of this festival were incorporated into the Christian festival of All Hallow's Eve, or Hallow-Even, the night preceding All Saint's (Hallows') Day. It is the glossing of the name Hallow-Even that has given us the name of Halloween. Until recent times in some parts of Europe, it was believed that on this night the dead walked amongst them, and that witches and warlocks flew in their midst. In preparation for this, bonfires were built to ward off these malevolent spirits.

By the 19th century, witches' pranks were replaced by children's tricks. The spirits of Samhain, once believed to be wild and powerful, were now recognised as being evil. Devout Christians began rejecting this festival. They had discovered that the so-called gods, goddesses, and other spiritual beings of the pagan religions, were in fact diabolical deceptions. The spiritual forces that people experienced during this festival were indeed real, but they were manifestations of the devil who misled people toward the worship of false idols. Thus, they rejected the customs associated with Halloween, including all representations of ghosts, vampires, and human skeletons - symbols of the dead - and of the devil and other wicked and evil creatures. It must also be noted that, to this day, many Satan-worshippers consider the evening of October 31st to be their most sacred. And many devout Christians today continue to distance themselves from this pagan festival.

The Islamic Perspective

Eemaan (faith) is the foundation of the Islamic society, and Tawheed (monotheism) is the essence of this faith and the very core of Islam. The safeguarding of this Eemaan, and of this pure Tawheed, is the primary objective of all Islamic teachings and legislations.

In order to keep the Muslim society purified of all traces of Shirk (polytheism) and remnants of error, a continuous war must be waged against all customs and practices which originate from societies' ignorance of Divine guidance.

Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (May Allah exalt his mention) issued a stern warning in this regard by stating: "Whoever imitates a people is one of them." [Abu Daawood]

Muslims should heed this warning and refrain from copying or imitating the Kuffaar (disbelievers) in their celebrations. Islam has strongly forbidden Muslims from following the religious or social customs of the non-Muslims, especially those of the idol-worshippers or those who worship the devil. The Prophet (may Allaah exalt his mention) said: "I swear by Him in Whose hands is my life! You are ordered to enjoin good and forbid evil, or else Allaah will certainly afflict you with torments. Thereafter, even your Du'aa' (supplications) will not be accepted." [At-Tirmithi]

From an Islamic standpoint, Halloween is one of the worst celebrations due to its origins and history. It is Haraam (forbidden) to partake in such a practice, even if there may be some seemingly good or harmless elements in it, as evidenced by a statement from the Prophet (May Allaah exalt his mention): "Every innovation (in our religion) is misguidance, even if the people regard it as something good." [Ad-Daarimi]

Muslims are enjoined to neither imitate the behaviour and customs of the non-Muslims, nor to commit their indecencies. Behaviour-imitation will affect the attitude of a Muslim and may create a feeling of sympathy towards the indecent modes of life. Islam seeks to cleanse the Muslim of all immoral conducts and habits, and thus pave the way for the Quran and prophetic Sunnah to be the correct and pure source for original Islamic thought and behaviour. A Muslim should be a model for others in faith and practice, behaviour and moral character, and not a blind imitator dependant on other nations and cultures.

Even if one decides to go along with the outward practices of Halloween without acknowledging the deeper significance or historical background of this custom, he or she is still guilty of indulging in this pagan festival. Undoubtedly, even after hearing the truth, some Muslims will still participate in Halloween and send their kids 'trick-or-treating'; they will try to justify it by saying they are doing it merely to make their children happy. But what is the duty of Muslim parents? Is it to follow the wishes of their children without question or to mould them within the correct Islamic framework as outlined in the Quran and Sunnah? Is it not the responsibility of Muslim parents to impart correct Islamic training and instruction to their children? How can this duty be performed if, instead of instructing the children in Islam, parents allow and encourage their children to be taught the way of the unbelievers? Allaah exposes these types of people in the Quran; He Says (what means): "We have sent them the Truth, but they indeed practice falsehood." [Quran: 23:90]

Muslim parents must teach their children to refrain from practicing falsehood and to not imitate the non-Muslims in their customs and festivals. If the children are taught to be proud of their Islamic heritage, they themselves will, if Allaah wills, abstain from Halloween and other non-Muslim celebrations, such as birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas, Valentines Day, etc.

Prophet Muhammad (May Allaah exalt his mention) said: "The Final Hour will not come until my followers imitate the deeds of the previous nations and follow them very closely, span by span, and cubit by cubit (inch by inch)." [Al-Bukhaari]

Islam is a pure religion and has no need to accommodate any custom, practice or celebration that is not a part of it. Islam does not distinguish between 'secular' and 'sacred'; the Sharee'ah (Islamic Law) must rule every aspect of our lives.

What to Do on Halloween

We have established, beyond a doubt, that the celebration of Halloween is absolutely forbidden in Islam - it is Haraam. The question arises as to what to do on this night. Muslim parents must not send their kids out 'trick-or-treating' on Halloween night. Our children must be told why we do not celebrate Halloween. Most children are very receptive when taught with sincerity, and especially when shown in practice the joy of their own Islamic celebrations and traditions. In this regard, we must teach them about the two Islamic festivals of 'Eed' ('Eed Al-Fitr and 'Eed-Al-Adh-haa – the fast-breaking festival at the end of Ramadhaan and the Sacrifice festival).

It must also be mentioned that even Muslims who stay home and give out treats to those who come to their door are still participating in this festival. In order to avoid this, leave the front lights off and do not open the door. Educate your neighbours about our Islamic teachings. Inform them in advance that Muslims do not participate in Halloween, and explain the reasons why. (Give them a copy of this article if needed.) They will respect your wishes, and you will gain respect in the process. The Prophet (May Allaah exalt his mention) said: "A person who calls another to guidance will be rewarded, as will the one who accepts the message." [At-Tirmithi]

Finally, we must remember that we are fully accountable to Allaah for all of our actions and deeds. If, after knowing the truth, we do not cease our un-Islamic practices, we risk the Wrath of Allaah Who warns us in the Quran with the verse (which means): "…So let those beware who dissent from his [i.e., the Prophet's] order, lest a grievous trial strike them or a painful punishment." [Quran: 24:63]

This speech by Louis Farrakhan, leader of the Nation of Islam, is disrespectful on so many levels. Lets just say it sounds like fascism right out of WWII. The Nation of Islam is seeing the Messiah in a man. The man being Barack Obama, Democratic Presidential Nominee.

Louis Farrakhan says, "He is the hope of the entire world", "would God allow Barack to be President of a country that has been so racist, so evil in its mistreatment of Hispanics, Native Americans, Blacks"

And, "This is a sign to you, its the time of our rise", "Barack Obama is the hand of the Messiah", "You are the instruments that God is gonna use to bring about universal change and that is why Barack has captured the youth. And he has involved young people in a political process that they didn't care anything about. That's a sign. When the Messiah speaks the youth will hear and the Messiah is absolutely speaking!"

This clip is from a meeting called the "In the Name of Allah, Saviours' Day 2008" I don't see this being played on any News Network or Cable channel. The build up to the Messiah statement (8:00 min marker) is just as troubling.

Further, to those who ascribe to Nietzsche's worship of strength; yet Nietzsche never found an incitement for anything, since he made power into a goal rather than an instrument, thus not going to the foundation of mankind's wishes. For at the simplest level of things, happiness alone is the incitement for the mind's actions, and while there are minds that are overjoyed by power, yet happiness is not bound to it; for certainly there are countless of examples of happy people who have not been greatly powerful or thought of themselves as greatly powerful, indeed such pleasure belongs (I would claim) only to the narcissist and the fascist -- that is, solely to those who conceive power as the source of happiness, and it does so because they conceive it as the source of happiness, since then they acquire their happiness by acquiring their power. In seeing that power is not any true source of happiness, we may conclude that those who acquire happiness through power acquire it through being deluded, i.e., they misconceive power to be happiness, and convince themselves of its excellence, in the same way as an art critic may convince himself of the excellence of one red triangle above another due to the artist's name.

Indeed, by the living concepts of good, by which mankind is repulsed at the abuse of power, we may learn that the innate goodness of man is also the source of his joy, or, the very zeal for which his power is ultimately instrumental.

Venial Sin According to Catholic teaching, this is an offence against the Laws of God not grave enough to cause a complete loss of sanctifying grace.

It is seen as an illness of the soul rather than its death.

Because the soul committing a venial sin falls short of perfection but is still united with God and capable of charity, it does not receive eternal damnation, as we find with the unforgiven mortal sin.

Instead, venial sins merit temporary punishments which purify the soul so as to prepare it for everlasting life in heaven.

The excellent - if old - Catholic Encyclopedia (1912) outlines some scriptural references held by some to support the classification of venial vs. mortal sin.

The distinction between mortal and venial sin is set forth in Scripture. From St. John (1 John 5:16-17) it is clear there are some sins "unto death" and some sins not "unto death", i.e. mortal and venial. The classic text for the distinction of mortal and venial sin is that of St. Paul (1 Corinthians 3:8-15), where he explains in detail the distinction between mortal and venial sin.

How is it that race is such a huge factor in this election? A whole lot of folks are up in arms about Barack Obama's race. I don't want to vote for a black man to be the president of the United States! These are the impassioned cries of some American voters. But, why all the fervor over this race issue? After all, whose to say that Barack Obama is even black? He is a composite of two different ethnic groups. He embodies the diversity of our great nation. In a country that has a history of hatred between blacks & whites, I think it's pretty moving that Barack Obama is a combination of both warring races. He is of the same ancestry as both the slave & the master. In fact, his white ancestors owned slaves in America. Here's an excerpt from www.thebaltimoresun.com.

I found this really interesting documentary online about race identity on youtube.com. It is about creoles who feel that they are, "Too White To Be Black, Too Black To Be White". As the title states, it is an in-depth look into how this multicultural group fits into a black & white world. It is very informative & it grapples with the all the issues of race. A clip of it is shown in this video.
One article I read about ethnicity was really astonishing! It is frome www.mixedheritagecenter.org. This website has a claim that has been disputed by some. That is that Barack Obama may not be the first black president of the United States of America! It wouldn't suprise me one little bit if there were presidents who didn't divulge their black ancestry. And if that's true, maybe that'll take the steam out of the race debate once & for all.

The news media mentions he is a College professor and served on some community boards with Obama.

When Ayers was young he was apparently involved with a radical violent group.

If Ayers was the evil traitor he is portrayed as being, why is he living the life of a free, educated man in Chicago?

I think that is obvious.  Maybe Ayers made a few mistake in life and overcame them.  Who hasn't?

Ignorance is defined as "lack of knowledge or education". I do not refer to this ignorance as in possession of a high school diploma or degree, I refer to ignorance in respect to lack of knowledge of life and human behavior.

We are very similar to animals.  I witnessed a documentary of how members of the docile hog family, when released in the wild, would physically and mentally de-evolutionize to a wild boar in a very short period of time.

This ignorance is breeding and growing at an alarming rate.  We have seen this evolve in times past, Nazi Germany in the 1930's and 1940's exemplified the reduction of a whole society to bottom feeder status, yet they were the "Master Race" in their own eyes.

Many wonder why we are here on this planet.  The one aspect of life that never changes and is the singular biggest threat to life is the ever going battle between the forces of "good' versus "evil".

Today we are witnessing a breakdown of the world's financial markets.  Trillions of dollars of life savings and other investments have vanished due to deceit and greed.

I don't think anyone can call deceit and greed "good" can they?  If they are not good then I think an appropriate term that may be used is "evil"

From the time we arrive on this planet we are subject to good and evil.  No one escapes the reality of either.

As a human I prefer good.  Makes me feel a lot better than the other side.  There are people who live for the other side.  The promises the other side offers are generally as false as the tools they use to promote their way.  Dominance, power, money, you name it, appeal to the base animalistic nature that all of us share.

The challenge of life and living is to rise above our own base nature.  What other purpose can there be for those who seek a purpose?

If "evil" wins the human race will destroy itself and it has the capabality of doing so.  Evil does not care, good does.

Sounds simple doesn't it?  It is simple, but often we don't see it for what it is.

Today I have no idea what I will do, but I'll figure somethine out.
