Ho comprato un "miniportatile", un EeePC nella sua versione 900A, cioè con schermo da 9", a 299 euro.

Il pc è veramente piccolo, sorprendente quanto sia piccolo, ma nonostante questo non è difficile da usare, anzi, è più facile scrivere con questa tastiera che con un portatile normale, poichè un portatile cerca di essere come una tastiera normale, questo qua invece non cerca di essere niente e quindi è relativamente facile. Il touchpad è sensibilissimo, pure troppo, e sinceramente non mi ci trovo molto bene. Lo ho preso bianco, ma è anche disponibile in nero.

Il sistema viene fornito con un sistema linux di una distribuzione un po' così e ovviamente io lo ho sostituito con il caro e vecchio Ubuntu nel suo fork (?!) ubuntu-eeepc. Ho dovuto farlo perchè la distro standard non riconosceva né la porta ethernet né il wirless rendendo impossibile qualsiasi smanettamento. E quindi eccomi qui a riutilizzare questo vecchio blog :)

Il sistema ha 1 giga di ram e un processore a 1.6. Vi consiglio questa versione se decidete di prenderlo, la versione 700 costa 100 € in meno, ma ha 512 di ram, un processore a 0.8 e uno schermo da 7".

Sono rimasto molto sorpreso dalle prestazioni, infatti, è estremamente veloce e silenzioso (ha un disco flash, quindi senza parti mobili)... l'unico rumore è il "sibilo" della ventola di raffreddamento del chipset che, a giudicare dalla temperatura "sulla plastica", non funziona un gran che bene. :) Per l'installazione ho lasciato perdere un po' le prestazioni per la stabilità, infatti ho messo il filesystem 2.

A prima vista sono soddisfatto dell'acquisto, le uniche cose che mi puzzano un po' sono: la plasticosità della tastiera. prevedo un cedimento a breve E BASTA.

Some of the Eee Box PCs have been shipped with viruses on board and ready to go. The virus was sitting on the D: drive, labeled as recycled.exe. As soon as that drive is opened, the virus is unleashed on the other drives and removable media attached. Strangely, Microsoft has come to the rescue as their Malicious Software Removal Tool detects it and removes it. This was only on some models, and apparently mostly in Japan.

Before you denounce ASUS for this oversight keep in mind that they make things that we really want, such as the touch screen Eee PC promised in 2009.

I purchased an eeePC 900 16G from Amazon with the intention of using it on my trip to blog and talk to my family back home using Skype. Little did I know that my wife would fall in love with it and want her own. This from someone who is not tech savvy. The small size makes it really comfortable to have use my lap and it does what I need it to.

I played around with the Xandros distribution that came installed on the eeePC and overall it does a pretty good job for what it's intended but I just couldn't get comfortable with it since it seemed to limit me at every turn. I wanted to install Anki, Gjiten, the GIMP and input for Japanese characters (with SCIM & Anthy) and Xandros was making it difficult. I looked around at my options and finally settled on eeebuntu. Since I use Ubuntu on all of my computers I'm most comfortable with that and I like idea of having a full featured compact laptop. It was really pretty easy to make a bootable USB drive and load the operating system from there. The instructions on the website were easy to follow and even though I had a few problems getting the webcam and the front mic to work, the forums provided the answers. I did turn off Compiz Fusion since I don't really care about the eye candy and I don't want the overhead. The only problem I'm still having is that Firefox tends to freeze up occasionally for 10 seconds before it continues. There seemed to be something on this in the forums but I haven't had time to look into it further. The only real issues that I have with the eeePC are that it takes a minute to get used to typing on the small keyboard but it really doesn't bother me (this entire post was done on the eeePC) and the small screen size can make things like doing photo editing difficult.

One of the things that I really like about the eeePC is the Ethernet port. I have read that many places in Japan provide Ethernet but not wireless (like MOS Burger) and I like the option of being able to plug into my router or modem if I need to work on them. There is also the issue of battery life but I really don't think it will cause me any grief when I'm on the road.

I thinking about tossing a Flip Video into my bags. The cool feature of the camera is the built-in USB connector and that it mounts as a USB mass storage device, so it plays nice with Linux. It's not an outstanding video camera but it's compact and simple to use. It something that you can just hand to someone and ask them take a video of you, they can figure it out without a manual (just press the red button). It might be fun and it might be wasted space. I found out about the Flip Video by stumbling across Shawn Power's video review of it on the Linux Journal's website (thanks Shawn! cool reviews and videos).

The only other piece of technology that I'm planning on bringing is a point and shoot camera. My Nikon Coolpix 3100 has some serious limitations even though it still takes very good pictures. I went and bought a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5. I spent a lot of time agonizing over this purchase since I won't be buying another camera for a long time. The camera I had before the Nikon was a Canon T50 a 35mm film SLR which was a very nice camera for the short time I had it. Coming from an SLR film background even the best point and shoot is a big disappointment especially in low light conditions. I've accepted this and feel that the TZ5 is a good compromise. It's 28-280mm (35mm equivalent) zoom lens which is close to what I was using with the SLR and it can fit in a pocket, something I could never do with my SLR. I think the wide angle lens will really come in handy. The big disappointment, besides the image quality, is the macro capability. The reason I brought the Nikon was it's excellent macro capabilities. I shoot a lot of flowers and it nice to be able to get close. This evening I was trying to photograph a spider for a post on another blog and the TZ5 puts me too far away.

One of the really nice things about this pairing is that I can take the SD card out of the camera and put it into the slot on the eeePC, I don't need a cable or a card reader. I am even able to use the GIMP on the eeePC to do post processing on the photos. I even wrote this post on the eeePC and edited the screen shot with the GIMP.

I'm really hoping to have a little time in the evenings where I can make a small post with some photos and tell you about my trip while I'm there. We'll see how that goes.

Olá pessoal. Hoje consegui arrumar um tempinho para ao menos dar as caras por aqui. Ando meio atarefado ultimamente. Essa semana por exemplo estou na capital do pão de queijo, isso mesmo, dei as caras aqui em Belo Horizonte para participar de um curso na PRODEMGE. São exigências de minha profissão.

Cheguei aqui no domingo, eu e minha namorada. Viemos no dia mais quente do ano segundo a meteorologia. Realmente estava um forno. Ao desembarcarmos do ônibus a gente sentiu isso claramente pois o ar condicionado do "buzú" ajudou bastante na viagem e o clima na capital estava terrivelmente quente. Isso as oito da noite!

Foram longas três horas de estrada. A viagem foi bastante tranquila. Com meu celular acompanhei as notícias das apurações das eleições e próximo a Juatuba tivemos a notícia do resultado final em nossa cidade. Já era o esperado, mas não entrarei em detalhes, afinal, política é uma merda mesmo.

Após levar minha garota até a região da Pampulha, local onde ela pernoitou na casa de amigos, voltei para o centro da cidade para encontrar o endereço onde eu ia ficar. Peguei o coletivo e me dirigi até a Praça da Liberdade onde "apiei". Como meu senso de direção é péssimo, fui logo procurando o endereço, isso era mais ou menos 22 horas, quando descendo a avenida Bias Fortes fui surpreendido com um acidente. Não sei explicar o que aconteceu, foi bem rápido, só lembro que um Siena entrou na frente de um Gol e o resultado foi um eixo quebrado e a lateral esquerda do Gol totalmente destruída. após o veículo subir no canteiro central da avenida. Aparentemente os ocupantes nada sofreram, a não ser o susto.

Após andar por mais algum tempo cheguei definitivamente em meu destino. Isso já eram quase 23 horas. Depois de um merecido banho caí na cama.

Uma das minhas preocupações quando vim para a capital era em relação a internet. Não sou daqueles que ficam 24 horas na net, porém necessito estar conectado devido ao  meu trabalho e faculdade. Para minha surpresa, no local onde estou hospedado, alguma boa alma deixou uma rede wireless aberta e neste momento estou usando-a para conectar-me ao mundo. Óbvio que tomei algumas medidas de segurança  e me certifiquei de usar somente o necessário de forma moderada e racional.

Me acompanha nessa aventura meu EeePc. Esse subnotebook realmente faz uma grande diferença no que diz respeito a portabilidade. Nele eu trouxe algumas tarefas da faculdade e nas horas de folga que são raras  eu me conecto ao mundo e organizo as pendências em relação ao curso e me atualizo sobre as notícias.

O curso é bastante interessante. Não entrarei em detalhes, mas estamos utilizando uma ferramenta chamada Bussines Objects, que manipula dados do armazém de dados da PM aqui de Minas. O Data Warehouse  permite consultar e manipular através da ferramenta todas as ocorrências policiais registradas no Estado. Nesse curso estamos aprendendo trabalhar de forma mais avançada essas informações. É sem dúvida uma ferramenta fantástica.

Confesso que essa experiência em estar na capital está sendo muito produtiva. Já fiquei aqui outras vezes  fazendo outros cursos, mas agora está diferente. Não sei dizer se é por ter esperado a oportunidade de participar desse treinamento a bastante tempo ou se é devido eu estar a 10 minutos da PRODEMGE onde aproveito as manhãs para fazer uma pequena caminhada, apesar da dificuldade devido a um menisco estourado, e me familiarizar com a capital de Minas. Além do curso  das novas amizades com os companheiros milicianos e contatos com a equipe de geoprocessamento e estatística, aproveito para ler na hora de meu almoço o livro 1808, de Laurentino Gomes, que conta a história da transferência da corte portuguesa para o Brasil. Recomendo, é uma ótima leitura.

Espero no entanto, quem sabe, qualquer hora encontrar com alguém da comunidade Linux aqui da capital pra trocar algumas idéias. Fico aqui até sexta-feira e se tudo correr bem, conforme o planejado, retorno para a casa e volto a rotina gostosa da vida no interior.

[acabtp] has already started hacking on his Dell Mini 9. He wanted to add GPS functionality, but didn't want a dongle or anything external. After ordering the smallest GPS unit he could find, he found a place to wire it in internally.  The end result had no bearing on the external looks of the computer. I wonder if he used the modification guide dell released?

Marketed as direct competition for the EEEPC, we'll probably start seeing a lot more hacks for these. We've already seen the EEEPC taken hacked more than we ever expected.

Ubuntu Eee е оптимизирана точно за Asus EeePC, драйверите и всичко необходимо за безпроблемна работа е налично.Ubuntu Eee напомня на Xandros,но доста по добре изглеждащ и функционален. Освен всичко това Ubuntu Eee може да се ползва и без Фаворит менюто,което го прави напълно функционално убунту

The Aspire is undoubtedly attractive and feels better designed and made than the best girlfriend's first generation EEE. The keyboard and the screen especially are superior to the EEE, and there is a multicard reader that's coming in handy.

Still compact, but larger than a Star Trek VI mug.

Apart from the multicard reader there's 3 USB Slots, an external VGA plug, and an additional slot for more SD cards. It boots up in seconds and apart from a mild whirring noise when the little fan is trying to cool Intel's Atom processor pretty quiet (though not as silent as the girlfriend's eee).

It's pleasant on the eye, balances well on my lap and fits perfectly into my work bag. Unfortunately the batttery is completely pish. While watching Little Britain USA (which, btw was rubbish) the battery drained almost cmpletely, and I presume that under full load the battery wouldn't last longer than an hour. No comparison to my Macbook that would happily run for 5 hours. So no long train journeys or flights to New Zealand in economy class then.

As mentioned before, Acer is selling the One with Linpus lite, a Fedora 8 derivative. This is quite similar in apperance to the EEE's Xandros flavour, just with worse applications. I have no idea who had the idea of leaving out Skype (it does have a webcam, you know), VLC and Thunderbird and instead use some other unusuable crap. So my first job was to get used to Fedora's weird package manager, 'yum'. I now have all the necessary apps installed, and available via XFCE's 'advanced menu', but still have to remove the annoying apps and then edit the desktop file to add the right icons. I am quite happy to do that, but I can see the best girlfriend ever struggling with that task.  I have no idea what Acer's software engineers were smoking when putting the One's software package together, but here they certainly messed up.  Another minus was the lack of the GIMP and the fact that so far my trusty TX1-Powershot is not being recognised by the crappy photomanager.

So, after 3 days with the Aspire, what are the first thoughts?

Well designed hardware that is let down by a crap battery and a software package that is lacking in functionality compared to the EEE's far superior Xandros flavour. I am pretty sure that very soon Ubuntu's Hardy Heron will make a guest appearance, but for now I am just happy that I have replaced the Macbook with a credit-crunch model (the Aspire costs exactly a third) and that I can again watch movies and listen to my music.

Via auto email notification I do find a site that has it although I am too late – they sell out in 17 minutes flat. I decide therefore to order it up front and take the wait. I did this today, and now I am looking forward to my lovely 6 cell, over 4 hour battery. Then what do I see…

That is it… missed it.. but then again when will the 9 cell be available?

Well, let me take heart in the fact that I should get mine in the next two to three weeks, and the 9 cell could be a little while longer than that :-)
