I can be quite fussy about the bassline/niche I listen to. That’s because there’s so much out there to choose from, so you’ve got to filter out what stimulates your ear. Finding a decent mix CD of bassline/niche (a genre name which is really the scene’s attempt at renaming H&G, speed garage, and the likes of) is not that easy, especially if you want constant bangers, mixed in well, and songs tracked separately. I was first alerted to Ill Mana from the song ‘Shut Ya Mout’. Yes I know, I was late with it. See below for link.

Mixtape IMO: The songs are chosen and mixed very well. AND, it’s tracked separately and named properly! Hooray! None of this super large MP3 business, searching for the part you like. Look out for “Passion Fruit”, a personal favourite on the mix.

Balinese dance usually identifies sacred characters because most dances are performed in co

Balinese dance usually identifies sacred characters because most dances are performed in connection with religious rituals. However, there are also many secular types of dance that are done purely for entertainment and fun and there are others that are performed with the tourists in mind.

One of the most irreverent of Balinese dances is joged, which is also known as joged bumbung; referring to the instruments made of bamboo used to accompany it. In the Indonesian and Balinese languages, joged means to shake the hips. A joged dancer wears relatively un-elaborate attire, comprising a kebaya and sarung. Her head, either with or without gelungan, is decorated with fresh and gold-plated flowers and she will be holding one or more fans while dancing. The fans are used to touch spectators in order to invite them to join the dance.

Unlike many other forms of dance, joged doesn't have any particular pattern of movement or special steps. It can start and finish at any time but 10 minutes is about the average time for each dancer. Great ability to improvise is a must for a joged dancer and although every dancer can do joged, the audience always expects to see an attractive and charming girl. She has to throw a lot of smiles to make her appearance attractive to the spectators, who are generally predominantly male!

Shaking the hips is one of the important characteristics of joged. The dancer does this in a seductive way in order to attract people to dance with her. An onlooker invited to dance is called pengibing and his dance is called ngibing. In one joged performance, there can be between 6 and 12 dancers and the show can take from 1 to 2 hours. Each girl appears once and invites from 4-8 spectators to dance but there is no set number for this.

A joged dancer usually comes to pick one of the bystanders after making a brief attractive dance movement. She selects one among many of usually rowdy watchers who raise their hands; this invited spectator won't necessarily know how to dance. Before dancing, the girl gives him a sash to be tied round his hips as a symbol of tying up his desires. While he tries to dance, his appearance will almost certainly look odd and this is a great source of amusement for the rest of the crowd. If you find yourself at a performance of joged bumbung and you don't fancy being dragged in to the centre, try to keep a good distance away because it is considered impolite to refuse the dancer's invitation.

Pengibing are attracted to dance, not just because they like it, but also because they are attracted by the charms of the joged. It is not unusual for one or two of the more adventurous young men to try to move his hips so he can touch the joged's hips, or even to steal a quick kiss. The more beautiful a joged dancer is, the greater the number of men volunteering!

Joged has a long history. In the kingdom era, early 19th century in Bali, the image of joged dancers was not very good. A performance was often arranged by kings to entertain their guests and the dancers were often low status women who could do little to object when asked by the king to please guests, whether romantically, sexually or in any other way.

Unfortunately, the negative image of joged dancers continues until the present time. After the reformation era, joged became a wild performance in terms of its hip shaking and erotic movements.

The distribution of a VCD of pornographic jogged, filmed using an amateur video in 2002, made the negative images of joged even worse. In this and in following years, images of joged caused public controversy; many people liked to watch a 'wild joged', while others accused it of not being in accordance with moral values.

Joged had usually been performed in the annual Bali Arts Festival but, as a consequence of the joged porn VCD, the performance disappeared from the 2004 Bali Arts Festival. Interestingly, at the national level, issues of erotic gyrations of the young dangdut singer Inul Daratista also sparked controversy, but it has been allowed and accepted by the dominant view as a type of performing art.

Ideas to promote joged came up and were welcomed as long as the dance developed without any tendency to sensual or sexual movement. A 'Festival ngibing' was held to improve the politeness and dancing ability of spectators when invited to dance. Additionally, the aesthetic aspect of the dance was emphasised.

After some efforts to minimise wild aspects of joged, it reappeared in the Bali Arts Festival 2005. As expected, it was in a more polite form though the tendency to the hot shaking hips and kiss-stealing has not disappeared at all. Joged has often been performed to entertain a group of tourists with the main aim of creating a cheerful and fun occasion where tourists, male and female, can experience stretching their hands for a Balinese dance! The happy and entertaining quality of joged much depends upon where it is performed and who are the audience.

[caption id="attachment_298" align="alignleft" width="202" caption="Little bit of a rip-off of Shaun of the Dead, but still nice."][/caption]

Dance of the Dead has the look and feel of a disastrous zombie flick. It has a bunch of no name teenage looking actors and actresses. A plot (Zombies rise from the dead on the night of the prom and high schoolers have to fight for their lives and their town) ripped from several other zombie movies. A movie poster eerily similar to that of 2004's amazing "zombedy" Shaun of the Dead. And, on top of all this, a director with virtually no feature film directing experience.

But this, true believers (Yes, I just pulled a Stan Lee reference out of my ass. You don't like it? Go read a DC comic then you pussy. Yeah I know Batman is good, but other than that, DC sucks.) is why we watch movies, and THEN decide if they suck or not. Or at least some of us do.

Dance of the Dead managed to do something that all good horror, and especially zombie flicks, HAVE to do. Make the most out of the pieces you have. If you look back in the legendary genesis of the zombie flick, you will quickly find out that the best of the bunch, even the ones done by famed directors like Romero and Fulci, were done on smaller budgets without the luxury of having big stars to bank on for success. Dance does this wonderfully, making even the predictable and annoying characters seem likable. And if they weren't likable, then they at least had the presence of mind to kill them off early!

This all brings me to my first point. The cast here, again full of people who's biggest project to date seems to be Dance of the Dead itself, are all very competent. The movie is exactly demanding, but it still has a lot of dialogue, and without people to spew those words out, however trite or meaningless, it's difficult to make a movie work. The saving grace seems to be the comedy within the conversations though. Nothing is taken to seriously in Dance of the Dead, and that lightens the load for everyone involved. It's a feel good, fun time zombie flick, and the cast seem to reflect that with the youthful energy being the driving force.

Direction here is solid, but not in the least bit flashy or pretentious. There some nifty use of heavy lighting and filters, the cornerstones of any 80's "Return of the living Dead" style zombie flick, but other than that, everything's played pretty straight forward, and I for one have no problem with that. If you don't feel comfortable as a director taking chances and being experimental, there's no need to force it. That "comfort" is actually a strength to the film, and I felt right at home with the direction, and thankfully nothing was ruined by the dreaded "shaky cam" or choosing shitty angles to shoot the action on. Simply put, the camera work never gets in the way of the fun.

Gore and special effects are all good, but it's most likely all stuff experienced zombie fans have seen before. Doesn't mean it isn't highly entertaining, and some of the bullet wounds are particularly graphic. There's also a head split in half the long way, and a severed head "still alive" gag that is very cool. Nothing here will have you howling or calling your friends to tell them "how awesome that kill just was", but it's all impressive none the less, and thankfully, almost totally free of any cgi. Yay! Here at the Midnight Showing we basically have one rule concerning our gore and special f/x, and that is "Fuck CGI!"

If you couldn't tell by now, Dance of the Dead is a movie that has all the elements to become a cult classic. Sure, that's pretty cliche to say, but when a movie has it, it just has it. I think the director has a pretty good handle on this zombie thing, and if he continues to interject the brand of humor in his future flicks, he should make some very interesting stuff. Also, some of the actors and actress's are surely going to be noticed because of this film.

If your looking for a light-hearted, "Shaun of the Dead" style zombie flick, and you can appreciate flicks that pay obvious homage to what's come before it (Return of the Living Dead, Night of the Creeps), then you should get plenty of enjoyment out of Dance of the Dead.

If only my prom was overrun by zombies.

I was at the final rehearsal of Mr. Nadarajan’s Muniandy’s upcoming show “Shanmukha”- all about Muruga as he says.. The rain and traffic made the journey to the MTC auditorium last an unbearable 1 hour 15 mins from my home... It should have lasted just 15 mins.. But I guess that’s part of KL..

When I reached the hall, a big part of the crew was stuck in the traffic and The Guru was patiently waiting for the members of the orchestra and students to arrive.

So have you put in the “saleable elements”?- I ask him. He just smiles and says he doesn’t believe in those gimmicks. Mr. Nadarajan Muninady is a graduate of the Kalakshetra who wants to pass the unadulterated Kalakshetra style to his students..

After some more waiting the rehearsal began with a Pushpanjali (that tham tham thangita thaka tat ho danga thakutha.. commonly seen among Sri. V. P. Dhananjayan students). 6 of his 8-9 year olds started off with this pushpanjali . Nadarajan , a serious Guru instructed these kids to put away their slippers neatly. They were further instructed about their entry, placement and exit very very carefully...He didn’t want them to doing their “athouthu chalanam” on stage J

His 3 senior students(who had had their arangetrams) started the next piece Kakka kakka kanagavel kakka and If I recall right Mr. Nadarajan joined in the latter half.

The 3rd item I saw was a solo by Mr. Nadarajan, enna solli padinalum unthanmanum urugavillai” in Neelamani composed by Ayanampatti Adishesha Iyer a totally abhinaya oriented piece..This is a song currently popularised By Smt. Aruna Sairam if I am not wrong. Despite being totally involved in the abhinaya, he turned to correct the singer who worded ”latchiyam” instead of “alatchiyum” in the Charanam.

Then it was the varanam, that started with the usual tha-ritha-ritha –ginajathi which his 3 senior students performed..

Unfortunately it was already too late and I had to leave...

The excellent mridangist, whose name my aging memory fails to recollect, was the one who accompanied Ajith for Ujjwala too.. Bhavani Logeswaran, who sang for Ajith was also giving her best today...Pathma was the other accompanying vocalist. The Nattuvangum artist had come from India- Vidya Ravi, (not sure of the first name again) who looked very comfortable conducting the orchestra. Meena Kumaree who was the excellent narrator at Ajith Bhaskkar's show also pitches in here in the same capacity.. She was in her practice costume was probably dancing too. Incidentally she happens to learnt from

It was reassuring to see such passion for Bharathanatyam and adherence to tradition. The kids had good araimandis and the savustavum of the students showed that Shubanjali , Nadarajan’s Dance Academy does take this seriously.. A few kids need to improve their natyarambham and complete their theermanam adavu in the faster speeds.

But I am sure these kids who look genuinely interested and happy to be dancing, have found a dedicated Guru who can bring out the best in them if they continued to show the same interest and dedication as they are showing now. It was also a pleasure to see the motivating parents who had driven their wards all the way in the cursed traffic and rain after a day’s hard work for the nth rehearsal.

It’s a pity that I may not get to see this program actually, would have loved to watch the varnam in entirety and the thillana.

The show is to be held at MATIC Auditorium today (Oct.11th) at 8pm. Ticketed at 30 and 50 RM

Last night I attended the Chamber Dance company’s 20th anniversary performance at Meany Hall.

Last night I attended the Chamber Dance company's 20th anniversary performance at Meany Hall. Celebrating the modern/post-modern in dance, I am both pleased to recommend the performance as well as hesitant to brand it an all together dance-piece. The first three performances were set to famous music pieces (Night on Bald Mountain, Valkeryie) and utilized silk sheets and a fantastic lightshow to create a very fluid, mesmerizing performance. But the "dance" aspect itself was lost in the push for modernist interaction with various medias. Little more than spins and repetitive arm movements (to move the sheets connected as seen in the picture to the left) were used. The lights were gorgeous, but then again, I didnot attend the Chamber performance for a LSD-inspired lightshow.

Finally, the core dance program was brought onto stage with the fourth performance. From then until an unfortunate post-modernist piece, there was compelling choreography and movements to entertain your eyes (no lights! thank goodness). After two fabulous performances, the most unfortunate piece came onto stage.

Now I appreciate social/political commentary... as a political science student, I know the necessity of bringing issues to light with whatever means possible. But the Bull (1994) "dance" (there goes those "'s again) between two males in tuxedos did not succeed in its message. Touching, grouping, slapping, and much crotch-grabbing was the jist behind this overly-long "comedic" piece. There was no dance involved (albeit one intricate balls-grabbing jump into each other's arms). It was noisy, offensive to conservatives in the audience, and unfortunate that the few children in the audience were enjoying the slapstick more than the adults.

For two amazing dance performances, please check out the Chamber Dance Program's 20th anniversary at Meany Hall.

Ticket Pricing:
$18 General Admission
$16 Faculty/Staff/UAA
$10 Students/Seniors

For a light show and a poor effort at social comedy-- well.... check out the Chamber Dance Program's 20th anniversary.

(As always, the review is IMHO *in my humble opinion*)

Apparently, I'm never satisfied. First, I just wanted to be in a show. And I got in a show! Then, I just wanted to be in the big dance number in the show. And I got in the dance number! And now that's not even good enough, and I want to be in the big whoop-dee-doo portion of the dance number, instead of standing in the back doing boogie-woogie fingers.

I am a greedy, greedy bitch.

I know that not everyone can be in the big dance portion. I know someone has to be in the back - that's even what I told my fellow ensemble girl when she complained to me about also wanting to dance more. And I know that the director promised all these other girls they'd be dancing, and he made no such promises to me. So I have no reason to complain.

But-but-but! I can dance the shit out of that number!

My new favorite person in the world, Gina, pulled me aside during a break and told me I should just ask J the director if I could be included. I hemmed and hawed, then rehearsal started again and the director wandered over near her.

"Hey, can I be in this part of the dance?" she asked.

"Sure," he answered, and she trotted up to join the chosen few. Then turned around to me and mouthed, "Loooooser!" Complete with a finger-L squarely on her forehead. I adore her.

She tried to convince me again later to just ASK him, and I explained, "I just don't have that thing you have." You know, that thing that allows you to open your mouth and say what you think. I need to be drunk to do that.

By the time rehearsal ended, my body would be contained no longer and INSISTED on at least doing a couple turns. I needed to spin like McCain needs to stop calling me his friend. So I waited until everyone was stacking chairs in the other room, made sure no one was watching (although perhaps I secretly hoped someone would walk in and see), did a quick prep and performed five (!) perfect pirouettes. Probably the best turns I've ever done.

Nobody walked in, of course.

So I packed up and went home, and the next day I did some more turns for Moo, who told me, "Nice, Mommy! Niiiiiiiice." And whaddaya know? Then, I actually did feel quite satisfied.

(Lava)" width="405" height="270" />[/caption]

Hot Lava is a 4 piece outta Richmond, VA whose music took me a listen or two to get into, but once I did, I'm hooked! Their label knows more about them than I do:
"It’s been 3 years of countless laughs and quite a few line-up changes, Richmond, Virginia's Hot Lava, comprised of Allison Apperson, Jared Sosa, Andrew Mowe and Matt Deans, are finally ready to heat things up. Their multi-layered debut album, Lavalogy, is a unique, conceptual adventure that plays like the musical companion to a satirical and subversive graphic novel.

There is no denying the band's love-affair with 90's indie-pop or their 60's inspired sensibilities, but Hot Lava's music goes beyond celebrating the past, it gazes into the future with a wide-eye and an endearing, off-beat sense of humor. Whether lead singer Allison Apperson is romanticizing about a spinach-eating blue dragon, or wrestling with technology (Apple+Option+Fire), she and the rest of the boys are focused on smothering their catchy pop vignettes with candy-coated melodies and infectious hooks that are guaranteed to get your temperature rising.

The Lava crew started out as art school buddies, Allison was design focused, Jared and Andrew did film and Matt did illustration and design. Their background had them playing in galleries and underground warehouse parties. The local club scene was a little more problematic where it was hard to find bands that shared their sensibility. At one point Allison with other friends and Lavas started a Pretenders tribute band called the Pretend Pretenders. (check out their take on “Kid” at walrusmusicblog.com)

” When we started playing live in late 2006, we didn't really have a niche. We played with a lot of local bands, but there wasn't a lot of chemistry at times,” explains Allison “We started playing shows with out of town bands (The Videohippos, The SadCobras) a couple months later and realized that we were all pretty like minded folks. We've all networked a little now, and we’re part of a community that sort of spans up and down the East Coast. We're all friends of friends of friends and fans of each other's music The internet has sort of fueled a new weird music revolution that's happening right now.”

[caption id="attachment_1095" align="aligncenter" width="374" caption="I wonder when flyers will do this??"][/caption]

Like I said, give them a listen or two and check them out live if you ever get the chance. They're wrapping up a pretty exhaustive tour with about 5 shows left, if you're in the Northeast, go see 'em!
