Taste: unbalanced, pure malt, syrupy, no hops, low strength, medium craft. 8 out of 10.

Palate: medium quality, smooth texture, short fruity finish. 4 out of 5.

Overall: Very much like iced tea. Alcohol is almost unnoticable, not a repeat, not a favorite, low value, medium craft. 16 out of 20.

This is so simple and so delicious. Cook bacon to just before crisp so you can work with it. Cut bacon in half. Drain the artichoke hearts and set aside. Soften your cream cheese so it is spreadable. To assemble, take a slice of bacon, put a little chunk of cream cheese and artichoke on one end. Roll the bacon up. Place all on platter and watch them go! Serve with Roasted Cherry Tomatos. Serves 6

Butler Masterpiece Round Accent Table in Old World Cherry

The rules:

1. I'll make all of the sangria recipes in the book, but not necessarily the tapas recipes at the end.
2. I can make the recipes in any order I choose, but have to finish before the end of my 1001 days (May 2, 2011)
3. I'll try to follow the recipes exactly (recommended wine styles, etc), but may ignore optional ingredients or substitute ingredients, especially for the several sangrias I've made before (red jalepenos instead of bell peppers in the Spanish Harlem sangria, maybe...)

The first sangria I made as part of the project was Fig, Cherry, and Cognac Sangria. With the dark, rich flavors, this might be considered more of a wintery sangria, but we had the dried cherries and figs on hand from one of Chuck's brewing projects, and it seemed like a good idea to use them up.

One of the best things about sangria is that it's super-easy to make - combine the wine and flavorings, chill for a few hours, then add some sparkling water and serve. By combining different kinds of wines, fruits, and other flavorings, the possibilities are almost endless. For most red-wine sangrias, the book recommends light-bodied red wines, particularly a Spanish Rioja Cosecha. (Cosecha refers to the vintage, and I think the book perhaps means crianza, which means aged for at least two years, instead, especially since the introduction contrasted the cosecha wines with the reserva wines, which are aged for at least three years). After much searching of the meager Spanish wine section of my local grocery stores, I found Campo Viejo Tempranillo, cosecha 2005, a rioja crianza (that should cover all my bases!) The wine was very dry and fairly light-bodied. I only had a small taste before adding it to the fruit, but would have been happy having a glass or two.

Step 1: slice figs and cherries; add warmed honey and cognac; stir to combine.

Step 2: add the wine; refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight.

Step 2: add chilled sparkling water, stir gently, and serve in pretty glasses. (optionally, strain seeds out before adding sparkling water; garnish with mint).

The finished product was delicious - the dryness of the tempranillo was nicely offset by the sweetness from the cherries and figs, and the cognac added an oaky warmth. We paired this sangria with homemade roasted garlic-pepperoni pizza, then ate the wine-soaked cherries and figs for dessert.

This is a great sangria (it's not the first time we've made this recipe), and I highly recommend it; to me, it matches well with tomato-based sauces because of the sweetness, and is more of a cooler-weather sangria because of the warmth added by the cognac - it's kind of a "comfort sangria". The richness of the figs and cherries also provide a sophistication to the flavor profile.

The other varieties are the smaller and brighter sour cherries like the Montgomery

variety and these often used for sauces, pies and other baked goods. The Rainier cherries are also good to eat and very sweet but grown in limited quantities. The other varieties are Lambert and Royal Ann.

Sour cherries are lower in calories and higher in vitamin C and beta carotene than sweet cherries. Cherries are rich in queritrin a flavonoid that's a potent anti-cancer agent, anthocyanins and bioflavonoids compounds that fight the pain from arthritis, gout and migraines, ellagic acid another potent anti-cancer agent and melatonin which induces sleep.

Select cherries that have been kept cool and moist, as warm temperature is not suitable for cherries. Store cherries in the refrigerator and cherries in good condition should last up to a week. Most cherries bought at the market are eaten raw, alone or accompanied by other fruits. Just wash the fruit and serve with the stems.

Michael Moore has just released his new documentary called Slacker Uprising, about the 2004 U.S. Presidential Election, as a free online download. Brave New Films, the film distributor said "it's currently being downloaded thrice as fast as the standard blockbuster on iTunes."

From the official website, Moore said the film;

takes place in the wake of Fahrenheit 9/11, during the run-up to the 2004 election, as I traveled for 42 days across America, visiting 62 cities in a failed attempt to remove George W. Bush from office. My goal was to help turn out a record number of young voters and others who had never voted before. (That part was a success. Young adults voted in greater numbers than in any election since 18-year-olds were given the right to vote. And the youth vote was the only age group that John Kerry won.)

One of the main reasons he made the film, and the widely free distribution, is to continue encourage millions of young and new voters aged 18-29 this November 4th to vote for a change and a better U.S. The film also features performances by Eddie Vedder, Tom Morello, Viggo Mortensen, Roseanne Barr, and other celebrities who supported Moore's 2004 American tour.

Danny Servick, the agent for Cleaves, confirmed Friday his client will sign with the Nuggets before training camp, which begins Tuesday. Cleaves, a six-year veteran, last played in the NBA in 2005-06.

Cleaves, scheduled to arrive in Denver on Friday afternoon, will sign a one-year nonguaranteed minimum contract. While Servick said Cleaves had been invited to Denver’s camp before it was known that Atkins would undergo right knee surgery Wednesday, his chances of at least starting the season with the Nuggets are now obviously better.

Atkins is expected to miss six weeks. That would keep the point guard out of all of training camp and the early part of the regular season, which begins Oct. 29.

“The Nuggets have always kept in touch with me regarding Cleaves,’’ said Servick, noting Cleaves worked out with them in April 2007, when the Nuggets chose to sign point guard Anthony Carter instead, and also in the summer of 2007.

Cleaves, 31, who won a national championship with Michigan State in 2000, has NBA averages of 3.6 points and 1.9 assists in 167 games. The 6-foot-2 Cleaves split 2006-07 with a team in Russia and the NBADL’s Bakersfield Jam and last season was with a team in Greece and the Jam.

“A lot of people have written off Mateen, thinking that he hasn’t continued to improve,’’ Servick said. “But his body is in the best shape I’ve ever seen him in.’’

Servick said Cleaves also has improved his shot, which had been a problem. He has an NBA career three-point percentage of 26.7 percent.

Also, forward Michael Ruffin,a 1995 Cherry Creek High School graduate, said Friday he will decide by this weekend whether he will attend camp with the Nuggets or Chicago.

Many people wonder why our prices are so low for such a high-end product.  Here are the basic price categories for a total package and the reasons why they are so much lower than the competition.

Single entry door: $2,000-$3,000 (click for sample pictures)

Door + Sidelights: $4,500-$5,500 (click for sample pictures)

Double Doors: $4,000-$6,000 (click for sample pictures)

These prices are for standard size doors and include the following:

Our prices are lower than the competition because we are a small family business with no commission-based salespeople to inflate cost.  Additionally, we really only sell one product: mahogany or oak doors.  Want fiberglass doors?  Steel doors?  Kitchen cabinets?  Sorry, we only sell wood entry doors.  This helps us keep costs low because it streamlines our efforts all across the board (from bulk discounts to efficient assembly).

When you come by the showroom please bring your rough measurements so we can give you an accurate price quote.  The most common size for a front door is 36 inches x 80 inches.  However we have many options for odd size doors.  Some of the more 'common' non-standard sizes are:

36 inches x 84 inches (commonly called '7-ft doors')

32 inches x 80 inches (frequently double doors)

40 inches x 80 inches

We can accommodate all of these sizes and more, generally for prices comparable to standard sized doors.  We also custom make doors to fit any size.
