The Macbook is really easy to use, even for a first time Apple buyer.

A while ago, I made what I'm hoping is my last purchase from eBay [I spend WAY too much there]. What was it you ask? A mini-DVI to DVI adapter. Thus hooking my MacBook up to my 22' Samsung monitor [I used to do a lot of gaming, now it's all work]. So now I've basically unplugged everything from my PC [eww, I knoww] and hooked it into the MacBook. I feel as though I'm overloading it, but it's fine, I feel. I might want to get a USB hub soon. Any suggestions? I'd prefer self-powered, since I don't have much room for more AC adapters under my desk.

Needless to say, I feel more organized than before. Not to mention comfortable.

But, on July 26, I made a sojourn to St. Paul to purchase a Macbook. It's the first Mac I've ever owned and it's not even for me. It's for my teenage daughter whose hand-me-down Gateway portable took a dump of largess proportions. Something with the power cord jack being connected to the motherboard and the repair costing twice what the computer could possibly be worth.

So sitting on my desk (see photo) is a nice shiny white Apple-made computer direct from Cupertino, Calif., (or perhaps China) to replace that archaic Gateway. With luck, this computer will take my daughter through her college years. In fact I know a couple people who are still using Mac portables that are nearing the 10-year-old mark. I'm guessing there are far fewer disc swaps required to make this Macbook run smoothly.

There's Always A Happy Gnome

After picking up the new computer, my accomplice and I stopped at the Happy Gnome on Selby Avenue in St. Paul for some fine patio dining.

Gnomes are bizarre fantasy creatures and why someone would name a bar/restaurant the Happy Gnome remains anyone's gnuess. A more appropriate gname might be the "Creepy Gnome." This particular establishment, though, features a cool menu of items along with some of the standard bar foods. Fortunately, the gnome decor is kept to a minimum.

The bar at the Gnome, offers about a millionty-six different bottles of beer including the very tasty pale ale brewed in Wisconsin called Fatty Bombalatty. A few Fatties and appetizers later, the mosquitos arrived, chasing us off the patio and back to Minneapolis where gno mosquitos exist whatsoever.

Macs. Fatties. Gnomes. Mosquitos. There seems to be a Lord of the Rings episode in here somewhere.

Thereafter, my problems began. I couldn't open the bookmark folder. Just now, I tried to view my iPhoto folder, and the wheel kept turning and turning, and I couldn't see any picture.

I called up Mobile 1 where I bought this and the man said to bring my unit to the store. He said he'd try to fix the problem. Worst case scenario, the unit would be brought to the microwarehouse or something in Pasig.

Meantime, what do I do? Oh my gosh. My files...

To avoid having to bring my MacBook to Mobile 1, I decided to trash my iPhoto and just use other options like finder to get to photos in my memory stick. And my son uploaded Firefox so I can have a new set of bookmarks.

Hopefully the two modifications will stop the hanging of this MacBook... Paging Steve Jobs. Just kidding. I'm but a speck in the Apple Consumer universe. How presumptuous of me to think he'll bother to pay a heed....

That's the Asus, MSI and IBM on top of each other.....for size comparison of course.

Now for the Specifications....these are all unconfirmed of course.

An MSI Wind desktop is also in development. I will definitely get one of these for the right price.

Ia lantas mencontohkan merek Axioo, BYON, Ion, dan Zyrex yang diakui buatan TanahAir.”Itu karena suku cadangnya sudah memenuhi kuantitas untuk dinyatakan sebagai produk dalam negeri oleh pemerintah,” tambah pria dua anak ini. Kendati demikian,dengan harga cukup murah Wisnu mewanti-wanti agar pengguna tidak terlalu berharap banyak soal fitur.

”Fitur-fitur yang ada hanya cukup untuk pemakaian standar saja. Misalnya untuk home office application. Pekerjaan mengedit foto atau memainkan gamemungkin bisa,tapi kurang memadai. Harga segitu ya harus sabar saja,”paparnya sembari tertawa. Ia sendiri sempat mencoba langsung Asus Eee PC.Hasilnya?

”Kalau untuk user seperti saya, tersiksa sekali,” kenangnya. Setelah pemakaian satu bulan, laptop dari Asustek Computer tersebut dijual lagi. ”Dari segi storage saja sudah sangat terbatas, media tampilan juga kurang memuaskan,”keluhnya. Laptop-laptop berharga murah memang tak banyak menyajikan fitur mewah.Kendati demikian, cukup banyak yang sudah puas menggunakannya.

Senior Marketing PT Yummy Food Utama Sofyan Ramassyah, misalnya, bangga dengan BYON M31W yang baru saja dia beli. ”Mulanya saya ingin membeli laptop merek terkenal tapi bekas. Tapi ternyata,uang yang saya punya cukup untuk beli laptop buatan lokal yang cukup terjangkau,”paparnya.

”Di samping harganya murah, fiturnya cuk u p l a h buat orang kantoran seperti saya.Paling cuma buka Word dan Excel untuk bekerja, atau Power Point buat presentasi. Jadi fungsinya benar-benar untuk mobile,”jelas pria yang akrab disapa Pian ini.

Menurutnya,citra buruk tentang laptop murah tak selamanya benar. Semua tergantung kebutuhan, seberapa banyak penggunaan laptop di luar komputer Desktop. ”Kalau dibandingkan dengan yang branded jelas beda.Tapi lihat sisi baiknya, fitur yang didapat hampir sama kan,” ujar Pian yang mengaku sering diledek teman sekantor.

Fitur yang paling disukainya adalah chatting menggunakan webcam di kamera bawaan 1.3 MB. Munculnya laptop dengan harga terjangkau ini disambut positif oleh pengajar sekolah internasional di bilangan Bintaro,Windi Hartono. ”Sebagai pendidik, saya sangat mendukung laptop murah untuk anak sekolah,” tukasnya saat dihubungi via ponsel. Menurutnya, pola pengajaran pendidikan saat ini sangat tepat jika diintegrasikan dengan teknologi informasi.

”Anak didik saya,walau b a r u ke l a s empat SD, sudah bisa mengoperasikan Power Point,membuat video, dan mengeditnya menggunakan Ulead,” ujar lulusan Universitas Pancasila Jakarta ini. Namun, pendapat berbeda diutarakan oleh Iskandar,Account Executive salah satu perusahaan yang bergerak di bidang advertising.

”Menggunakan produk lokal itu gambling.Fitur boleh lebih banyak dari produk bermerek lainnya, tapi banyak hal yang harus dipertimbangkan juga,”tegas pemakai Acer Aspire 4315 ini. Meminang laptop, lanjut Iskandar, tak hanya bicara soal fitur.Tapi juga persoalan after salesseperti suku cadang, garansi, gerai distributor, aksesori dan lainnya.

”Terutama untuk pemakaian dalam kurun waktu lama. Kalau baterainya bocor,mudah dicari atau tidak? Jangan-jangan karena harganya murah suku cadangnya malah langka?”paparnya.

Menurut Iskandar,smart thinking diperlukan saat ingin membawa pulang laptop baru yang murah.Tak hanya kenyamanan saat baru menggunakan, tapi juga kenyamanan di kemudian hari. ”Jadi mending nambahdana sedikit lagi supaya bisa beli yang agak bagus,” saran Iskandar. (muhammad fauzisyah)
